Divine Salvation Through Human Action

“You delivered the mighty into the hands of the weak…”
The Sefat Emet begins with the theme of Chanukah: salvation comes in a form that reveals divine strength through human weakness.
This is like the verse: “Hashem is for me, among those who help me,” and it does not say “Hashem helps me,” but rather “among those who help me.”
The phrasing shows that God brings salvation through a person’s own actions, not as an external intervention.
The meaning is that God saves through the person himself, so that one is helped by one’s own actions.
Human effort becomes the vessel through which divine help appears.
And because Israel knows well that it is not by their own strength and power...
Their humility allows divine aid to flow through their deeds.
Therefore God helps them in such a way that they themselves are the ones who act.
This paradox—human doing as divine doing—is the essence of the Chanukah miracle.
And through this: “And I shall gaze upon my enemies.”
Because the salvation comes through them, they merit witnessing the downfall of evil.
For when the beneficiary of the miracle does not merit the miracle through his own deeds, he is not worthy to see the wicked fall, as was said to Lot: “Do not look behind you.”
Only when one participates in the redemption may one witness its completion.
But since “Hashem is for me, among those who help me,” as above, therefore I shall gaze upon my enemies.
The person’s involvement grants the right to see justice unfold fully.
And this is the meaning of the salvations and consolations that Israel received regarding the exile.
Exile eventually reveals its own purpose through the salvation that emerges from it.
For all the suffering under their enemies was in order that through it they bring forth these wonders from potential into actuality.
Oppression creates the conditions for hidden holiness to surface.
For truly, every exile is to extract sparks of holiness that became absorbed there.
Exile is a mission of spiritual recovery.
And Israel becomes the agents for this task.
Their wandering is purposeful: to redeem lost holiness.
And when redemption comes, they then understand retroactively the purpose of the exile and the work that God accomplished through Israel.
The meaning of history becomes clear only after its completion.
And the truth is that exile comes through prior sin, by which the lights were scattered from Israel to other places.
Sin disperses holiness; exile gathers it back.
Therefore Israel must scatter in exile to gather these sparks.
Their dispersal mirrors the scattered holiness they must redeem.
And this is the meaning of “that the foot will be removed from the marketplace”—that overlarge step they took in sin, outside its proper place.
Missteps cause dispersion; exile corrects and heals them.
And may God grant that we be gathered from the four corners of the earth to our land speedily.
The final hope: the gathering of all sparks and all exiles.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanukah reveals a pattern of divine salvation that works through human action. Exile itself becomes the means for gathering scattered holiness, and redemption retroactively clarifies its purpose.
