Miracles Renew the Nation
Hanukkah · Exile · Redemption · Divine Providence · Jewish Identity
“The miracle of the lights, which the Sages established as a festival for all generations, shows that it is a salvation for all Israel.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that the miracle of the Hanukkah lights was not only for that generation but for the entire people across time, establishing an enduring salvation for all Israel.
“For in every exile under the four kingdoms, when Israel emerges from subjugation, God performs a miracle to awaken the souls of the Jewish people.”
Every redemption from exile contains a divine miracle whose purpose is to reawaken and revive the inner spirit of the people.
“As we see now, the weariness of exile confuses the souls of Israel, as it is written: ‘Drunken, but not with wine.’”
Exile drains clarity and spiritual strength, leaving the people disoriented, as though intoxicated without wine.
“Therefore, after redemption, there must be a miracle in order to renew the souls of Israel.”
A miracle is needed not only to free Israel physically but to restore their inner vitality and spiritual renewal.
“And if they had been unable to perform the lighting of the lamps in the Temple for those eight days at the beginning of their redemption, their hearts would have been broken.”
Without the ability to rekindle the Temple light—the symbol of divine presence—the people would not have been able to sustain hope at the moment of liberation.
“Through the miracle their souls were strengthened, and thus this miracle became the sustaining force of all Israel.”
The miracle was not only practical; it fortified the inner life of the nation, making it a foundation for their continued existence.
“For would it be wondrous to God that Israel should leave any kingdom without a miracle?”
The Sefat Emet emphasizes that miraculous redemption is the natural mode of Israel’s deliverance, not an exception.
“Rather, the miracle is necessary for the survival of Israel, to lift them from the lowliness of exile.”
Miracles elevate the people from the spiritual degradation imposed by exile, restoring dignity and divine connection.
Summary: The miracle of the Hanukkah lights was essential not only historically but existentially. Each redemption requires a miracle to revive Israel’s inner spirit after the crushing weariness of exile. The Hanukkah miracle strengthened the nation at a vulnerable moment, forming a foundation for their continued spiritual endurance.
