Faith Reveals Divine Kingship

Pesach · תרנ"ה-תרנ"ו (1894) · Essay 13

Emunah · Divine Providence · Kingship of God · Israel · Redemption

In the Midrash on “Then Moses sang,” this refers to the verse “Your throne is established from then.”

The Sefat Emet cites the Midrash, which links the Song at the Sea to the eternal establishment of God’s throne.

Even though You have always, so to speak, “stood,” Your throne was not settled until Your children sang the Song.

God’s kingship was not fully manifest in the world until Israel offered praise, allowing the Divine throne to “settle.”

As it is written: “The Lord is high above all nations.”

This verse introduces the theme of God’s exaltedness beyond worldly comprehension.

For the Holy One is exalted and uplifted from the beginning of time, and the world is not worthy to receive His kingship.

Creation on its own lacks the capacity to bear the full revelation of Divine sovereignty.

And this is called “standing,” since the lower worlds cannot receive His royal glory.

“Standing” symbolizes that God’s kingship remains unmanifest when creation cannot receive it.

But Israel, through faith, believed in God—that even though He is exalted, nothing is outside His providence and His kingship rules over all.

Israel’s faith bridges the gap between Divine transcendence and the world, affirming God’s immanence.

And according to the measure of their faith, they merited to receive His kingship.

The capacity to receive God’s reign grows in proportion to one’s faith.

And truly, Israel has always been prepared for this, for all was created for Israel, who are called “the first.”

Israel’s spiritual role is primordial; creation is oriented toward their capacity for Divine revelation.

But they could not actualize this testimony until they became free people.

Only with the Exodus—when external constraints were removed—could Israel reveal God's kingship in the world.

And when Israel was completed, the glory of His kingship was revealed in the world.

Their spiritual readiness enabled the full manifestation of Divine sovereignty.

Thus it says: “They believed in the Lord—then they sang.”

Faith precedes and enables song; praise emerges from deep trust.

Meaning: the Divine Name signifies “He was, He is, and He will be.”

This expresses the timelessness and constancy of God’s presence.

This is the essence of faith: that God brings nature into being, and there is nothing besides Him.

Nature itself is sustained at every moment by Divine will; there is no independent existence.

And indeed, one who has complete faith is always filled with joy, knowing that everything comes only from God.

True faith produces continuous joy, springing from trust in Divine providence.

This is the meaning of “They believed—then they sang.”

Song arises naturally from perfected faith.

The Sefat Emet teaches that God’s kingship becomes manifest only through Israel’s faith, which enables the world to receive Divine revelation. Faith leads to joy and culminates in song.
