Recognizing Divine Justice in Exile
“Further, in the Midrash: ‘And they believed in the Lord’—then Moses sang.”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which connects Israel’s faith at the sea with the song that followed.
As it is written: “The Lord is known through the judgment He performs.”
This verse serves as the prooftext that God’s acts of justice reveal His presence.
“For He paid back Egypt measure for measure.”
The Midrash emphasizes that divine justice is precise and reciprocal.
“The wicked is ensnared by the work of his own hands.”
The punishment of the Egyptians arose from their own deeds, turning their actions into the cause of their downfall.
“Therefore—reflection forever. See there.”
This invites contemplation on the enduring meaning of God’s justice.
He explains: This faith was established for all generations because they saw God’s judgment—that the work of Egypt's own hands ensnared them, and that everything the Egyptians did ultimately prepared their own trap and downfall.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the clarity of divine justice at the sea created a lasting foundation of faith.
And this is “The Lord is known”—that it became revealed then that all the exile and all the enslavements they imposed upon us were entirely a divine orchestration.
What seemed like oppression driven by human will was now seen as guided by God for a greater purpose.
Therefore—reflection forever.
Since all events are guided from above, one must hold this awareness continually.
And we must thank God at all times—even in distress and exile.
Gratitude is rooted in the faith that God’s guidance operates even in hardship.
And to believe that everything is preparation from Him, may He be blessed.
Every difficulty contains within it a divine purpose that leads toward redemption.
And from this, Israel attained complete faith at the sea.
Seeing the pattern revealed allowed their faith to reach full clarity.
“Then they sang, and they said”—for future generations.
The song was not only a response in the moment but a teaching meant to carry this faith into all generations.
Summary: The Sefat Emet interprets the events at the sea as the moment when Israel recognized that all suffering and exile had been divine preparation, and this revelation established enduring faith for all generations.
