Manna Beyond All Change
בפרשת המן הנני ממטיר לכם לחם מן השמים.
“In the section of the manna: Behold, I will rain down for you bread from heaven.”
The Sefat Emet begins by framing the manna as a direct divine gift descending from above without human mediation.
איתא המן בזכות משה.
It is taught: The manna came in the merit of Moses.
Moses’ spiritual level enables Israel to receive sustenance of a purely heavenly nature.
כי המזון הבא מן הארץ הוא ע"י שינוים ומורכבים מדומם וצומח.
For food that comes from the earth arrives through many changes and is composed of mineral and plant elements.
Earthly sustenance undergoes transformation and mixture, reflecting the lower world’s instability.
אבל המן הוא השפע הבא מן השמים בלי שינוי.
But the manna is a flow that comes from heaven without change.
Heavenly sustenance descends in purity, untouched by processes of alteration.
וכן הוא בחי' מרע"ה משה משה בלי פסיק כדאיתא בזוה"ק מיומא דאתיליד שרתה עמו שכינה.
And so is the aspect of our teacher Moses: “Moses, Moses,” without a pause, as the Zohar teaches that from the day he was born the Shekhinah rested upon him.
Moses’ identity is unified; he embodies constancy, mirroring heavenly unchangeability.
וז"ש כזרע גד לבן כי לבן הוא בלי שינוי גוונין.
And this is what is meant by “like coriander seed, white,” for white implies lack of changing colors.
The whiteness of the manna symbolizes a stable, unshifting spiritual essence.
וכן איתא במרע"ה ששימש בחלוק לבן.
And it is taught that Moses served in a white garment.
His outer appearance reflects his inner constancy and purity.
ולכן מתיחס אל השמים כי צבא השמים אין מקבלים שינוי.
Therefore the manna is associated with the heavens, for the heavenly hosts do not undergo change.
The manna’s origin aligns with a realm defined by permanence.
ולכן נק' עומדין.
Therefore they are called “standing.”
Heavenly beings remain fixed in their nature, unlike earthly creatures.
ובנ"י אחר יצ"מ נעשו כמלאכים שאין מקבלין שינוי.
And the Children of Israel, after the Exodus, became like angels who do not receive change.
The redemption lifted Israel to an elevated, stable spiritual state.
וזה עיקר יצ"מ לצאת משיעבוד הגוף.
And this is the essence of the Exodus: to emerge from the enslavement of the body.
Freedom means release from the body’s limitations and variability.
שעיקר השינוים באים מן הגוף.
For the main source of change comes from the body.
The physical dimension introduces instability into human life.
וכ"כ אמרתי אלקים אתם כו'. אכן כאדם תמותון.
Thus it is written: “I said you are gods… yet like men you shall die.”
Israel’s potential is divine, but physicality pulls them toward change and mortality.
כי כל השתנות בכלל מיתה כי עצם החיים אינו מקבל שינוי.
For all change is a form of death, since the essence of life does not accept change.
True life is absolute constancy; alteration signals distance from divine vitality.
ולכן דרשו לחם אבירים שנבלע באיברים.
Therefore they expounded “the bread of the mighty,” meaning it was absorbed into the limbs.
Manna did not transform into waste, reflecting its changeless nature.
שגם אחר אכילה לא נשתנה המן להיות פסולת ככל מאכל ונבלע כמו שהוא.
For even after eating, the manna did not change into waste like other food, but was absorbed as it was.
This purity underscores its heavenly source.
ולכן אחר שנפלו בנ"י ממדריגתם טפלו על המן שהוא לבן.
Therefore, after the Children of Israel fell from their level, they complained about the manna being white.
Once they themselves became beings of change, they resisted the changelessness symbolized by whiteness.
לפי שנעשו בני השתנות ויצאו מבחי' לבן הנ"ל.
For they had become people of change and departed from the above‑mentioned “white” state.
The shift in their spiritual condition distorted their perception of the divine gift.
ואיתא במדרש ויקרא בפסוק עמל אדם לפיהו וגם הנפש לא תמלא.
And it is taught in the Midrash on Leviticus regarding the verse “Man toils for his mouth, yet the soul is not filled.”
The Midrash highlights the mismatch between physical effort and spiritual fulfillment.
משל לעירוני שנשא בת מלכים אפילו מאכילה כל מעדני עולם אינו יוצא ידי חובתה לפי שהיא בת מלכים.
A parable: A townsman marries a princess; even if he gives her all the delicacies of the world, he does not satisfy her, for she is a king’s daughter.
The soul’s origin is lofty; earthly pleasures cannot satiate it.
כמו כן הנפש שהיא מלמעלה לא תמלא.
So too the soul, which is from above, cannot be filled.
Only heavenly nourishment satisfies the spiritual core.
אבל בנ"י אחר יצ"מ כ' אנכי כו' המעלך מארץ מצרים הרחב פיך ואמלאהו.
But Israel after the Exodus—“I am… who brought you up from Egypt; widen your mouth and I will fill it.”
Once redeemed, Israel is empowered to receive divine fullness.
שניתן להם לחם מן השמים.
For they were given bread from heaven.
Heavenly sustenance meets the needs of the heavenly soul.
ותמלא הנפש שהיא מן העליונים.
And the soul, which is from above, becomes filled.
The manna restores harmony between soul and sustenance.
וע"ד הרמז משל המדרש אפילו מאכילה מעדני עולם כו'.
And by way of allusion: the Midrash’s parable teaches that even with all delicacies of the world…
Earthly effort alone cannot fulfill spiritual longing.
פי' אפי' היגעים בעבודת הבורא בחכמה האנושית כמו שהי' קודם קבלת התורה.
Meaning: even those who exert themselves in serving the Creator through human wisdom, as before the giving of the Torah…
Without revelation, human intellect stops short of true fulfillment.
מ"מ הנפש לא תמלא.
Nonetheless the soul is not filled.
The soul requires divine, not merely human, nourishment.
חוץ בנ"י שקיבלו התורה מן השמים יכולין לפרנס הנפש בשלימות.
Except for Israel, who received the Torah from heaven, and thus can sustain the soul completely.
The Torah itself is heavenly sustenance parallel to the manna.
לכן נקראו בנ"י השולמית.
Therefore Israel is called “the Shulamit.”
This name reflects wholeness and completeness.
וכ' בתורה כל נתיבותי' שלום.
And it is written in the Torah: “All its paths are peace.”
Peace signifies harmonious alignment between heaven and earth.
והוא עיקר הלחם מן השמים.
And this is the essence of the bread from heaven.
The manna embodies perfect spiritual integration and divine peace.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that manna represents heavenly constancy, aligned with Moses and the angelic state granted to Israel after the Exodus. Earthly food and human wisdom cannot fulfill the soul, but divine sustenance—manna and Torah—restore spiritual completeness.
