Joseph’s Hidden Trust in God

“That the tribes did not recognize that he was Joseph.”

The Sefat Emet explains that Joseph possessed a spiritual capacity to conceal his identity, which is why his brothers failed to recognize him.

“For this is the power of Joseph the righteous — ‘and he was in the house of his master,’ etc. — that he was able to hide himself, etc.”

Joseph’s ability to remain hidden was a spiritual talent already evident in his time in Potiphar’s house.

“In the Midrash: ‘And he did not turn…’ this refers to Joseph.”

The Midrash teaches that Joseph did not turn toward vanity or corruption; this steadfastness is central to his character.

“And one may explain that certainly Joseph the righteous did not place his trust in the cupbearer, but only in the Holy One.”

Although Joseph spoke to the cupbearer, his true trust remained solely in God.

“And his saying ‘But remember me’ implies that through the dream it appeared to him that he was being shown his salvation would come via the cupbearer, as indeed later occurred.”

Joseph interpreted the dream as hinting that the cupbearer would be God’s instrument for his release.

“Therefore he said, ‘But remember me.’”

This request followed naturally from how Joseph understood the dream’s message.

“But in truth it was God’s will that the cupbearer would mention him on his own.”

God intended the salvation to occur independently of human initiative.

“And not through the will or intentional remembering of the cupbearer.”

The process was meant to unfold without Joseph relying on the cupbearer’s decision.

“But because in Joseph it was fulfilled that he ‘did not turn to vanity,’ etc., even though he thought the remembrance would come through him…”

Joseph’s inner purity remained intact despite his mistaken impression of how help would arrive.

“Nevertheless, in truth he did not trust in him.”

Joseph’s heart remained faithful to God alone.

“Therefore God assisted him and saved him, such that although he said ‘Remember me,’ the cupbearer forgot him.”

The forgetting itself was divine mercy, preserving Joseph’s purity of trust.

“For one who sins intentionally—‘feed him and let him die,’ etc.”

The Sefat Emet contrasts Joseph with those who truly misplace their trust and thus suffer spiritual failure.

“But blessed is the man… who truly trusts in God.”

True trust brings divine protection, even when one errs.

“God saves him even if he falls into error, as above.”

Joseph’s mistaken request did not invalidate his righteousness.

“And this is what is said: ‘A Hebrew youth, a slave’—to degrade him; all was from God so that the cupbearer would not wish to mention him on his own.”

Even the disparaging language was divinely orchestrated to ensure the moment of revelation occurred at God’s chosen time.

“And this is a great expression of God’s love, as said above.”

The concealment and delay were forms of divine affection for Joseph.

“And this is ‘This is Joseph,’ as above.”

The revelation of Joseph’s identity embodies the entire process of hiddenness and divine guidance.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph’s concealment, his mistaken impression about the cupbearer, and even the cupbearer’s forgetfulness were all expressions of God’s love and Joseph’s pure trust. The salvation was designed to come directly from God, preserving Joseph’s spiritual integrity.
