Inner Sustaining Power of the Tzaddik

בפסוק ויוסף הוא השליט על הארץ כו'.

“In the verse: ‘And Joseph was the ruler over the land,’ etc.”

The Sefat Emet opens by framing Joseph’s authority over Egypt as spiritually significant, not merely political.

דכתיב אנכי עשיתי ארץ ואדם עלי' בראתי.

“As it is written: ‘I made the earth, and upon it I created man.’”

This verse teaches that the world’s structure and destiny depend upon the human being placed upon it.

שהכל תלוי באדם וכ"כ כל שתה תחת רגליו.

“For everything depends on the human being, and so it is written: ‘You placed all beneath his feet.’”

Humanity is granted the capacity to influence creation, elevating or diminishing its spiritual flow.

והוא רמז למדת יוסף הצדיק שנק' כלכל דכתיב ויפתח יוסף כו' כל אשר בהם.

“And this hints to the quality of Joseph the righteous, called ‘the sustainer,’ as it is written: ‘And Joseph opened… all that was in them.’”

Joseph embodies the divine attribute that sustains and channels blessing into the world.

והוא הנקודה פנימיות שמחי' כל חי ונק' כל'.

“He is the inner point that gives life to all living things, and is called ‘kol’ (all).”

Joseph represents the core spiritual vitality that animates all existence.

וע"ז כתיב וירא אלקים כל אשר עשה כו'.

“And regarding this it is written: ‘God saw all that He had made…’”

The divine recognition of creation’s wholeness reflects the unified inner point embodied by Joseph.

ונקודה זו שכוללת הכל הוא כח הצדיק שבזה פותח כל הסתרות ומוציא הארה הגנוזה בשם.

“And this point that includes everything is the power of the tzaddik, which opens all concealments and brings forth the hidden light in the Name.”

The tzaddik reveals the spiritual illumination embedded in God’s concealed realms.

כמ"ש במ"א כי החושך יכסה ארץ כמ"ש ותבלענה הפרות כו'.

“As stated elsewhere: ‘Darkness will cover the earth,’ as in the verse ‘and the cows swallowed…’”

The imagery of darkness and swallowing symbolizes spiritual constriction that the tzaddik must pierce.

נמצא בשני רעב עצמם יש בתוכם שני שובע.

“Thus, within the two years of famine themselves there were two years of abundance.”

Even apparent lack contains hidden spiritual fullness.

וז"ש ויפתח כו' אשר בהם בשני רעב עצמם.

“And this is the meaning of ‘And he opened… all that was in them’—even within the years of famine.”

Joseph revealed the inner abundance concealed within scarcity.

וחלום זה הי' הכנה לגאולת מצרים לברר כי קודם הגלות הי' שבע גדול במצרים.

“And this dream was preparation for the redemption from Egypt, to clarify that before the exile there was great abundance in Egypt.”

The dream signaled that spiritual resources were seeded in Egypt before the descent into exile.

שזרע הקב"ה שם נצוצי קדושה ויוסף לקט הכל.

“For the Holy One sowed sparks of holiness there, and Joseph gathered them all.”

Joseph’s role was to collect and unify the dispersed holy sparks placed in Egypt.

וזה הרמז שמה שאצרו כולם נרקב כי השובע בגשמיות הי' טפל לפנימיות.

“And this is the hint that what all the others stored rotted, for the physical abundance was secondary to the inner essence.”

Physical wealth decays when detached from its spiritual core.

וגם אח"כ לא התחיל הגלות לשלוט עד שקם מלך חדש אשר לא ידע את יוסף.

“And afterward the exile did not begin to rule until a new king arose who did not know Joseph.”

The exile’s force only took hold once Joseph’s spiritual influence was forgotten.

כי כ"ז שהי' נודע כחו של יוסף הי' מפתח הגאולה פתוח.

“For as long as Joseph’s power was known, the gate of redemption remained open.”

The awareness of Joseph’s spiritual role preserved access to redemption.
