Subduing Desire for God

Self‑Nullification · Willpower · Serving God · Conquering the Inclination

“Joseph gave of what was his to Him.”

The Sefat Emet opens by stating that Joseph’s greatness lay in offering something truly his own to God.

For what a person gives of his own to God—namely, when he nullifies his own will for the sake of God’s will—this is called “his,” meaning that he surrenders and subdues his personal desire.

The Rebbe explains that true giving is not material but internal: surrender of self‑will.

For performing good deeds is possible only with God’s help.

Good actions are ultimately empowered from above, not originating from the person alone.

But restraining oneself and overcoming one’s desires—that is truly “his.”

Self‑restraint is the uniquely human contribution in divine service.

As it is written in the Midrash: “Fear the Lord, my son, and the king—appoint him over yourself,” etc.

The Midrash teaches that one must enthrone God over oneself by subduing personal will.

See there in Parashat Va’etchanan.

This reference connects the teaching to the broader theme of submission found in Va’etchanan.

This refers to the nullification of one’s will, as noted above.

The core act of divine service is internal surrender.

And through this, one is also granted kingship.

Self‑mastery becomes the foundation for spiritual authority.

Be a king over your inclination.

The Sages teach that governance over one's impulses is true kingship.

For when a person properly subdues himself before God…

Authentic humility aligns a person with divine will.

…then naturally nature and all creation become subdued before him.

Creation responds to the spiritual stature of one who has mastered himself.

For since he is subdued before God, their submission to him is in fact submission to God.

The person becomes a conduit through which creation bends toward God.

And this is the longing of all creatures and of nature as well.

All existence seeks alignment with the divine through human refinement.

And this is the meaning of “and be a king,” etc.

The final phrase summarizes that kingship arises from inner self‑subjugation.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph’s true offering to God was his self‑mastery. Good deeds come from God’s assistance, but overcoming one’s desires is uniquely one’s own. Through surrendering personal will, a person gains kingship—mastery over the inclination—and creation itself aligns with him, fulfilling its desire to submit to God.
