Hanukkah as Gateway to Redemption
Hanukkah · Redemption · Light · Temple · Spiritual Awakening
“Why was the mitzvah established at the doorway? To hint that the days of Chanukah are an opening and beginning of the complete redemption that will come speedily in our days.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that the placement of the menorah at the doorway symbolizes that Chanukah opens the first portal toward the final redemption.
“And the principle is that God never leaves Israel without a hidden point, so that there will never be a complete fall, Heaven forbid.”
There is always a concealed spark of divine connection within Israel that prevents total spiritual collapse.
“Therefore, before the destruction of the Temple, a radiance remained from the Temple service: the Chanukah lights, which are a hint to the Menorah, as the Ramban writes: ‘Yours will remain forever.’”
The Chanukah candles preserve a trace of the Temple’s Menorah, a light that continues even after the Temple’s destruction.
“Therefore it is called Chanukah, like ‘Educate (chanoch) the youth according to his way,’ because it is preparation and training for knowing how to fulfill the lighting of the Temple Menorah itself, which will be rebuilt speedily in our days.”
The very name Chanukah implies training; the holiday prepares us to perform the future Temple service.
“Regarding this doorway, the Sages said: ‘Open for Me like the eye of a needle.’ It is a small opening, a tiny gate that always exists even within all the concealments of the world; and when Israel strengthens themselves through this small gate, the great gates of the Sanctuary and its Hall will open for them speedily in our days.”
The menorah at the doorway reflects the mystical teaching that even in darkness a small spiritual opening remains; if Israel responds to that opening, it expands into full redemption.
“And understand these matters.”
The Sefat Emet urges contemplation, indicating deeper layers within the symbolism of the Chanukah doorway.
Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that the Chanukah lights placed at the doorway signify the first opening toward redemption. God always leaves Israel a hidden point of light; the Chanukah candles preserve the radiance of the Temple Menorah. Chanukah serves as training for the future Temple service, and even in times of concealment a tiny spiritual opening remains, which can expand into full redemption.
