“Go out and learn…”
The Sefat Emet begins by invoking the teaching that one must look deeper into the roots of redemption.
And it seems that the descent into Egypt was the counsel and salvation from the will of Laban the deceiver.
The descent to Egypt served as a divine strategy to counteract the harmful intentions of Laban, who sought to spiritually damage Israel.
And certainly the entire exile was for the good.
Exile, in the Sefat Emet’s view, is not punishment alone but a constructive process meant to bring spiritual elevation.
And our sages said: “You have seen what I did to Egypt — many owed Me even before they confronted you, and I collected through you…”
The Sefat Emet cites the Midrash that God’s judgment upon Egypt was already warranted, and Israel’s presence became the channel through which that judgment unfolded.
Meaning: because the Egyptians greatly angered the Holy One, blessed be He, His counsel was to sustain Israel’s exile there so that their evil deeds would assist in Israel’s redemption.
The wickedness of Egypt paradoxically became the mechanism through which redemption emerged, since their corruption hastened divine intervention.
As our sages said on the verse: “Were it not for the anger of the enemy…”
This verse illustrates that the aggressive hostility of the nations can itself provoke divine salvation for Israel.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the exile in Egypt was divinely orchestrated both to counter Laban’s harmful intentions and to transform the wickedness of Egypt into a catalyst for redemption. Their evil actions hastened God’s salvation, turning exile into a purposeful and beneficial process.
