Redemption of Speech in Egypt

“He went down to Egypt compelled by the word.”
The Sefat Emet raises the difficulty: in what sense was Jacob compelled by the divine word to descend?
It is difficult, for as soon as Jacob heard from Joseph, he went down there on his own.
This suggests Jacob’s descent was voluntary, prompted by news of Joseph.
Only on the way did the Holy One appear to him and say, “I will go down…”
The divine reassurance came after Jacob had already begun the journey.
But it seems he went on account of Joseph.
His motivation was familial, not explicitly commanded.
And even though it was from Heaven…
The Sefat Emet concedes that providence directed events regardless of Jacob’s intention.
All matters are this way—so what does it mean “compelled by the word”?
The phrase still requires interpretation beyond simple providence.
It may be explained by what the Zohar says on Vayera: that the “Word” was in exile in Egypt.
The Sefat Emet introduces the mystical notion that speech itself entered exile.
Thus Israel’s descent to Egypt and their redemption were all a repair of speech.
The exile‑redemption cycle serves to restore the divine faculty of expression in the world.
And this is the meaning of “compelled by the word.”
The “compulsion” is metaphysical: Jacob descended because the Word in exile drew him.
And the mouth of the Word is Joseph and the Messiah.
Joseph embodies the channel through which divine speech emerges and is later perfected in the Messiah.
For in truth he descended to Egypt for Joseph.
Jacob’s personal motive aligns with the mystical role Joseph plays.
Meaning: to transform the Ten Utterances into the Ten Commandments.
The primordial creative speech becomes revealed moral speech through Israel’s history.
As explained elsewhere, according to the Zohar, “speech” is the recognition of His kingship in all things.
Speech equals awareness of divine sovereignty permeating creation.
This was hidden in exile.
Divine kingship was obscured in Egypt.
And through the redemption from Egypt, His might became known.
The Exodus restored the visibility of divine power and speech.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Jacob’s descent to Egypt was driven by a mystical need to redeem the divine Word trapped in exile; Joseph served as the “mouth” of that Word, enabling the transformation of creation’s utterances into the revealed commandments.
