Divine Elevation Through Exile
Shechinah · Sparks of Holiness · Exile · Redemption · Hallel
“In Hallel: ‘Who raises Himself to sit, who lowers Himself to see... who lifts the poor from the dust... who seats the barren woman in her home.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the verses in Hallel that describe God’s exaltedness and His lowering Himself to lift up the lowly and restore the barren. These serve as the conceptual frame for the entire teaching.
For behold, the children of Israel were created to clarify and reveal the kingship of Heaven in the world.
The purpose of Israel is to manifest divine sovereignty by elevating the holy within creation.
And the Holy One led them through all places in order to extract the sparks of holiness found everywhere.
Israel’s wanderings are purposeful: each location contains fragments of holiness that must be elevated.
And this is what is meant by “He raises from the dust.”
This refers to God’s enabling Israel to uplift the sparks embedded in lowly places.
“From the refuse heaps He lifts the poor”—through the children of Israel.
God’s raising of the lowly occurs through Israel’s spiritual labor.
And this is the meaning of “to seat them with nobles,” etc.
The result of this elevation is Israel’s return to its rightful spiritual stature.
Therefore, “He seats the barren woman in her home,” and the Sages interpreted: “They counted Your children like that weasel,” etc.
This midrash indicates that Israel drew the Shekhinah into even the most constricted and degraded places, just as the weasel dwells in narrow, hidden spaces.
Meaning: the children of Israel drew the Shekhinah into all the places of their troubles in order to extract from each place the holy spark associated with the Divine Name.
Wherever Israel descended in exile, the Shekhinah descended with them so that holiness could be rescued from within darkness.
And the commentators interpreted “Who raises” as meaning: He raised me, etc.
Some read the verse as Israel speaking of its own elevation by God.
And likewise we interpret “Who lowers”: that the Holy One raised us and also lowered us into all dark places in order to elevate everything from the depths of the earth to the heights of heaven.
Both exaltation and descent are divine acts; Israel’s descent into darkness enables cosmic elevation.
Therefore Hallel was instituted for every misfortune that may come.
Hallel is recited because each deliverance reveals the purpose of suffering: the emergence of new light.
And when they are redeemed from it, they recite Hallel because a new light shines in the place where there had been darkness.
Redemption transforms the very site of darkness into a source of fresh illumination.
For “Hallel” is from the expression “when His light shone.”
The essence of Hallel is the shining of divine light revealed through redemption.
Summary: Israel’s wanderings and sufferings serve to elevate hidden sparks of holiness. God both raises and lowers Israel so that divine light can be revealed in every place. Hallel celebrates the new light that emerges specifically from former darkness.
