פסח על שם שפסח הקב"ה על בתי בני ישראל כו'.

“Passover is named for the fact that the Holy One skipped over the houses of the Israelites, etc.”

The Sefat Emet opens by explaining that the very name Pesach reflects God’s protective skipping over Israel’s homes.

הענין הוא מה שצוה הקב"ה להיות הדם על הפתח וראה את הדם כו' ופסח כו'.

“The matter is that God commanded that the blood be placed upon the doorway, and He would see the blood, etc., and would pass over, etc.”

The blood on the doorway served as the divine sign through which God enacted the skipping.

שזה הי' המכוון להיות נתהפך מדה"ד עצמו לחוס על בתי בנ"י כדאיתא כשישראל זכאין שמאל נעשה ימין.

“This was intended so that the attribute of judgment itself would be transformed to have compassion upon the homes of Israel, as it is taught: when Israel is worthy, the left becomes the right.”

The Sefat Emet teaches that the miracle was not bypassing judgment but transforming judgment into mercy.

ובאמת פסח הוא זמן דין כדאיתא בזוה"ק שלכך הי' המצוה בדם ובצלי אש להיות זמן דין למעלה.

“In truth, Passover is a time of judgment, as stated in the Zohar; therefore the commandment involved blood and roasting in fire, making it a time of judgment above.”

Pesaḥ’s rituals reflect its root as a moment of heavenly judgment.

אך לבנ"י נתערב בו חסד בדמיך חיי.

“But for Israel, kindness was mixed into it—‘By your blood you shall live.’”

Israel experiences this time of judgment as life‑giving compassion.

וזה ענין הפסיחה והדילוג להשתנות מדין לחסד לבנ"י.

“This is the meaning of the skipping and leaping: the shift from judgment to kindness for Israel.”

The skip symbolizes the transformation of divine mode.

וזה פי' כחצות הלילה כמ"ש בזוה"ק.

“And this explains ‘around midnight,’ as stated in the Zohar.”

Midnight marks the transition point between judgment and mercy.

שנחלק הלילה שהוא מדה"ד להיות כלולה בחסד.

“For the night, which is the attribute of judgment, is split such that it becomes included in kindness.”

Judgment is revealed to contain inner compassion.

וכ' ה' אלקיך אש אוכלה.

“As it is written: ‘The Lord your God is a consuming fire.’”

This fire represents divine judgment.

ואתם הדבקים בה' אלקיכם חיים כולכם.

“But you who cleave to the Lord your God are all alive.”

Israel, through cleaving, transforms fire from destruction into life.

ועי' בזוה"ק בראשית נ"א.

“See Zohar, Bereishit 51.”

The source elaborates on judgment containing hidden mercy.

וזה ענין מה נשתנה הלילה הזה שנקראת ע"ש החסד הגם שלילה הוא דין.

“This explains ‘Why is this night different?’—it is called by the name of kindness even though night is judgment.”

Pesaḥ night reveals the hidden kindness within judgment.

ובאמת פנימיות הדין הוא חסד גנוז בה.

“In truth, the inner essence of judgment is kindness concealed within it.”

Judgment serves as a container for deeper benevolence.

והדין הוא רק שמירה אל הגנוז בה.

“Judgment is merely a guard for what is hidden inside it.”

The harsh exterior protects the inner good.

ובנ"י זוכין לטוב הגנוז.

“And Israel merits the hidden good.”

Israel accesses the inner kindness beyond the outer shell of judgment.

וז"ש ושמרתם את המצות כי בעצם היום הזה כו'.

“Thus, ‘You shall guard the matzos, for on this very day...’”

Matzah relates to this guarding and inner purity.

פי' הדין הנתוסף על הפנימיות הוא בחי' חמץ לכן נאסר לישראל החמץ כי לישראל נתהפך לחסד.

“Meaning: the added layer of judgment upon the inner essence is chametz; therefore chametz is forbidden to Israel, for for them it has been transformed into kindness.”

Chametz symbolizes the outer layer of judgment, removed to reveal pure compassion.

וזה הרמז שלך אי אתה רואה אבל אתה רואה של אחרים ושל גבוה.

“This is the hint: your own you do not see, but you see that of others and of the Most High.”

Israel does not experience the judgment above, which applies only outwardly.

כי למעלה הוא זמן דין.

“For above it is a time of judgment.”

The heavenly realm retains the aspect of judgment.

אבל רק לאחרים.

“But only for others.”

The harshness is directed outward, not toward Israel.

ולכם הוא חסד שיש להם דביקות בעצם היום שהוא חסד דגניז בה.

“But for you it is kindness, for they have cleaving to the essence of the day, which is concealed kindness.”

Israel attaches to the inner layer of compassion.

וזה בערב תאכלו מצות.

“Thus: ‘In the evening you shall eat matzos.’”

Matzah aligns one with the inner purity of the day.

ובזוה"ק בא איתא על הפתח זה פתח הגוף זה מילה.

“And the Zohar teaches: ‘The doorway’ refers to the doorway of the body—circumcision.”

The doorway symbolizes the human point of spiritual entry.

והכל ענין אחד דכ' לפתח חטאת רובץ.

“And it is all one matter, as it is written: ‘Sin crouches at the doorway.’”

The doorway is a point of vulnerability requiring protection.

ולכן בכל מקום השער והפתח צריכין שמירה וזה נוהג בעולם שנה נפש לכן יש ערלה בפתח הגוף.

“Therefore every gate and doorway needs guarding, and this applies in world–year–soul; thus there is foreskin at the doorway of the body.”

Each level of existence has a guarded boundary.

ומעין מ"ש להט החרב המתהפכת לשמור כו' הפנימיות.

“And like what is written: the flaming, turning sword that guards the inner essence.”

Judgment guards holiness.

ונתן הקב"ה רשימה ואות בפתחי בנ"י.

“And God placed a mark and sign upon the doorways of Israel.”

Israel is protected through divine signs.

בגוף המילה.

“On the body—circumcision.”

The physical covenant serves as a spiritual mark.

ובבית מזוזה.

“On the house—the mezuzah.”

The home is likewise guarded.

ובזמן ליל שמורים.

“And in time—the night of watching.”

Pesaḥ night is inherently protected.

וכמו שמזוזה מברחת הסט"א מן הבית כדאיתא בזוה"ק זז מות.

“Just as the mezuzah drives away the Other Side from the house—as the Zohar teaches, ‘death withdraws’—”

The mezuzah repels harmful forces.

כן מילה מברחת הסט"א מן האדם.

“So circumcision drives the Other Side away from the person.”

The covenant purifies the individual.

וכמו כן ליל שמורים משומר ובא.

“Likewise, the night of watching is protected and comes protected.”

The night itself provides safeguarding.

וממילא כשהסט"א עורקת מן הפתח זוכין לכנוס אל הפנימיות.

“And once the Other Side flees from the doorway, one merits entering the inner essence.”

Purified gateways allow access to holiness.

וז"ש לעיל מענין בעצם היום הזה הוצאתי.

“And this is what was said above regarding: ‘On this very day I brought you out.’”

The exodus is entry into divine inwardness.

כי עיקר הגאולה לעבור הפתח ולכנוס לעצם היום הזה.

“For the essence of the redemption is to cross the doorway and enter into the essence of the day.”

Redemption is inner transformation.

והוא ע"י מצה דמברחת הסט"א כדאיתא בזוה"ק שהוא מלשון מצה ומריבה עיין שם.

“And this is through matzah, which drives away the Other Side, as the Zohar states—for it is from the root meaning ‘strife’—see there.”

Matzah serves as a spiritual purifier that dispels negativity.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Pesach reveals the inner kindness hidden within divine judgment. Through signs at the doorway—blood, circumcision, mezuzah, and the protected night—Israel transcends the external layer of judgment and enters the inner essence of divine mercy.
