Shechinah’s Ascent on Pesach

Pesach · תרנ"ד (1893) · Essay 1

Pesach · Shechinah · Geulah · Matzah · Divine Attachment

It is stated in the Zohar that on Passover the Hallel is not complete except on the first day because the redemption was not yet complete from our side.

The Sefat Emet explains that while a divine redemption occurred, Israel had not yet reached full redemption through their own spiritual work.

But from the aspect of the supernal union, as discussed in Parashat Emor, it was complete.

From the divine realm the redemption was whole, rooted in a higher spiritual union.

The matter is as it is written: “I Myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I Myself will bring you up.”

This teaches that God descended with Israel and would likewise elevate them.

Thus the verse “Around midnight… I will go out” refers to a level of ascent of the Shekhinah.

The exodus moment reflects an elevation of the divine presence itself.

And through Israel’s cleaving to God, they were drawn after that redemption.

Their attachment to God enabled them to follow the Shekhinah’s ascent.

For just as the Shekhinah, so to speak, descended with Israel into exile, so Israel rose with Her ascent.

Their spiritual state was linked to the Shekhinah’s movement—downward and upward.

Therefore afterward they needed to clarify the redemption from their own essence.

After the divine pull, Israel had to complete the redemption through personal effort.

As it is written: “You shall count for yourselves”—for your own selves.

The counting of the Omer symbolizes developing inner redemption.

Thus “I will bring you up,” and afterward they also rose through their own essence.

The divine elevation came first, then human elevation followed.

The joy of the Passover night is in the ascent of the Shekhinah.

The night’s celebration reflects divine, not human, spiritual movement.

Thus “Pesach is for God,” as the Mekhilta states: Do your actions for the sake of Heaven.

The Passover rite focuses on God’s action rather than human merit.

This is the hint in eating matzah, the “bread of poverty”: nothing comes from us except that we were drawn after God.

Matzah symbolizes utter dependence on divine initiative.

For leaven is something later added to the dough.

Leaven represents human spiritual contribution.

But matzah is only what was originally in the dough and has nothing of its own.

Matzah embodies simplicity and lack of self-generated expansion.

This is the hint in the wicked son’s question: “What is this service to you?” since the redemption is not complete from our side.

The wicked son rejects the process because he sees no human role in that stage.

Thus he denies the essential principle, not believing the verse “I am with him in distress.”

His disbelief rejects the foundational notion that God descended with Israel.

And this was the essence of the redemption.

The core of redemption is God’s shared descent and ascent with Israel.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Passover begins with a divine redemption—the ascent of the Shekhinah—with Israel following through their attachment. Human completion of redemption comes later, symbolized by the Omer count. Matzah expresses dependence on God alone, while leaven symbolizes later human contribution. The wicked son denies this divine companionship, which is the essence of redemption.
