כתיב מן המצר קראתי כו' ענני במרחב.
“It is written: ‘From the narrow place I called… He answered me in expansiveness.’”
The verse frames the movement from constriction to divine expansiveness.
ופرشנו על הצעקה במצרים ועל השירה.
“And we explained this regarding the outcry in Egypt and the song.”
The Sefat Emet links Israel’s cry in Egypt with the later song at the sea.
דאיתא במד' בנ"י מתגאין בירושתם ונצעק אל ה'.
“For the Midrash states: Israel becomes proud in their inheritance, and they cry out to God.”
The cry emerges when Israel overreaches and realizes their dependence on God.
וכמו שכחן של בנ"י בפה להיות נושע מן המיצר וע"י הצעקה נגאלו ממצרים.
“And just as Israel’s power is in the mouth—to be saved from constriction, and through the cry they were redeemed from Egypt…”
Speech itself is presented as the instrument of redemption.
כמו כן הבינו שע"י הצעקה יכולין לעלות ולהתקרב אליו ית'.
“So they understood that through the cry they could ascend and draw close to Him.”
Vocal expression enables spiritual elevation.
וזו השירה הוא ענני במרחב כדכ' הרחב פיך ואמלאהו.
“And this song is ‘He answered me in expansiveness,’ as it is written: ‘Widen your mouth and I will fill it.’”
The song itself is the experience of expansiveness.
וכל מה שביקשו ישראל בשירה זו נתקיים בכל הדורות עד לעתיד.
“And everything Israel requested in this song was fulfilled for all generations, even to the future.”
The song establishes enduring spiritual effects.
ובוודאי זה פלא גדול לומר זה אלי ואנוהו.
“And surely it is a great wonder to say: ‘This is my God and I will glorify Him.’”
Human declaration of connection to God is astonishing.
הגם דכ' ישראל אשר בך אתפאר.
“Even though it is written: ‘Israel, in you I take glory.’”
Scripture speaks of God’s pride in Israel, not the reverse.
אבל לא שיאמר האדם ואנוהו.
“But not that a person should say: ‘I will glorify Him.’”
Human self-expression toward God seems paradoxical.
אך מרוב התשוקה שהי' לבנ"י להיות אופן שיקיימו ואנוהו הגם שא"א.
“But from the great yearning Israel had to fulfill ‘I will glorify Him,’ even though it was impossible…”
Yearning itself generates spiritual possibility.
והקב"ה מילא משאלותם ואמר אשר בך אתפאר.
“God fulfilled their desire and said: ‘In you I take glory.’”
God responds to human yearning with reciprocal affirmation.
ויש לנו ללמוד ממה שנתן השי"ת בחירה לאדם ויכול לעשות עבירה ולהמרות מצות הבורא אשר זה הוא פלא גדול.
“And we must learn from the fact that God gave humans choice, enabling sin and rebellion, which is a great wonder.”
Free will itself is astonishing.
מכש"כ בחירת הצדיק בצדקתו שבוחר ומשתוקק לעשות נחת רוח אליו ית'.
“All the more so the choice of the righteous, who long to bring God delight.”
Righteous longing has great creative power.
הקב"ה ממציא לו מקום שלא בדרך האפשרות.
“God provides him a place beyond what is naturally possible.”
Divine assistance expands the bounds of human capacity.
וגם לפי פשוטו ואבנה לו מקדש.
“And even in its simple meaning: ‘And I will build Him a sanctuary.’”
The sanctuary itself exceeds human comprehension.
וכי זה מושג אל השכל שישכון הקב"ה בבנין בו"ד.
“Is it conceivable that God would dwell in a constructed building?”
The paradox of the Divine Presence in physical form.
רק לפי הרצון והתשוקה של בנ"י זכו לזה.
“Only through the desire and yearning of Israel did they merit this.”
Human longing makes divine indwelling possible.
והרי אמרו מיד אלקי אבי וארוממנהו.
“And they immediately said: ‘The God of my father, and I will exalt Him.’”
They balanced exaltation with humility.
להודיע כי לא עלה על דעתם ח"ו להתדמות אליו ית'.
“To show that they never imagined, God forbid, to resemble Him.”
They recognized transcendence even within closeness.
וכמ"ש והחיות רצוא ושוב.
“As it is written: ‘The living beings ran and returned.’”
A model of oscillation between closeness and retreat.
ואמרו ואנוהו ואמרו וארוממנהו כי שניהם אמת.
“And they said ‘I will glorify Him’ and ‘I will exalt Him,’ for both are true.”
Closeness and transcendence coexist.
ומי שיודע ומתברר לו כי אין זה סותר את זה והשי"ת נעלם וגבוה מכל גבוה.
“And one who knows that these do not contradict, and that God is hidden and higher than all heights…”
The paradox resolves only through deeper awareness.
ומתגלה וממלא כל עלמין.
“And He is revealed and fills all worlds.”
God is simultaneously transcendent and immanent.
כפי בירור הידיעה אצל בני אדם כך הוא נמצא ומתגלה להם.
“According to the clarity of human understanding, so is He found and revealed to them.”
Revelation is proportional to human readiness.
וז"ש הרחב פיך ואמלאהו על הבקשה להתקרב אליו ית'.
“And this is the meaning of ‘Widen your mouth and I will fill it’—regarding the request to draw near to Him.”
Opening oneself invites divine response.
והכל בכח הפה.
“And all is through the power of the mouth.”
Speech remains the central spiritual tool.
ב' הבחי' מן המצר ובמרחב והם בחי' תפלה לעני תפלה למשה.
“The two aspects: from the narrow place and in expansiveness—these are the aspects of prayer: ‘A prayer of the poor,’ ‘A prayer of Moses.’”
Prayer encompasses constriction and expansiveness.
וזה הקול קול יעקב.
“And this is ‘the voice is the voice of Jacob.’”
Jacob’s power is in spiritual speech.
וכ' חרב פיפיות ב' פיות. בכות ושירות כמ"ש לעיל.
“And it is written: ‘A double-edged sword’—two mouths: in weeping and in song, as explained above.”
The dual power of lament and praise completes the spiritual cycle.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s cry and their song form a single movement from constriction to expansiveness, enabled by the power of speech and the yearning of the heart, creating the conditions for divine revelation.
