Song as Creation’s Fulfillment

Pesach · תרמ"ז (1886) · Essay 19

Shirat HaYam · Creation · Purpose · Shabbat · Divine Praise

“Then Moses sang.”

This introduces the theme of the Song at the Sea as the culmination of the redemption.

It is taught in Midrash Tazria, in the section ‘Back and Front,’ that even praise rises last.

The Midrash teaches that true praise of God emerges only after all events unfold.

So too, in the Exodus, all creatures were altered through the ten plagues.

The transformations of creation during the plagues prepared the world for divine revelation.

And at the splitting of the sea, as it is written, “I will be glorified through Pharaoh,” for they were like beasts to them.

Egypt’s downfall displayed God’s mastery, reducing the oppressors to powerlessness.

And after all this, the souls of Israel were elevated.

The miracles uplifted Israel spiritually, enabling a higher state of awareness.

And this was the ultimate purpose.

The elevation of Israel’s souls was the true goal of all the miracles.

“Then Moses sang.”

The song expresses the realization of this spiritual purpose.

Just as in Creation, the Sabbath was designated for Israel, and Adam recited “A psalm, a song for the Sabbath day.”

Shabbat, sung by Adam, represented the completion and purpose of creation.

For it is the purpose of creation.

Shabbat embodies the final aim of the universe’s formation.

“All God’s works are for His sake,” to bear testimony to Him.

Creation’s goal is the revelation of God’s presence.

So too, after all the miracles of the Exodus and the Sea, the purpose was this song.

The Song at the Sea expressed the completion of the redemptive process.

Therefore it says “will sing,” for the primary intention was brought from potential into actuality.

The future-form verb indicates the emergence of spiritual fulfillment.

And from this song a Torah section was formed.

The song was elevated to eternal status in the Torah.

And it is written, “They said, saying,” meaning this song was planted in the mouths of Israel for all generations.

The song became part of Israel’s ongoing spiritual expression.

It is taught in the books that “the One who chooses songs of praise.”

God chooses song that emerges from deep inner fullness.

For the essence is when a person is filled with song until it remains fixed in his heart—this is what God chooses.

True divine song is that which transforms and settles permanently within the heart.

And so it was with this song.

The Song at the Sea possessed this enduring spiritual power.

Therefore God chose this song and established it as a Torah portion.

The song’s permanence and depth merited its inclusion in the Torah.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the Song at the Sea was the ultimate purpose of the miracles of the Exodus, just as Shabbat is the purpose of creation. True song arises only after transformation and revelation, and God chooses the song that becomes fixed in the heart—therefore the Song at the Sea was set permanently in the Torah.
