The Purpose of Creation and Redemption
Creation · Torah · Soul · Shabbat · Blessing
“And these are the names—this comes to add to the first, for the Book of Genesis is the creation of the world.”
The Sefat Emet explains that Exodus adds a new stage beyond creation, moving from the world’s formation to its purpose.
“And the Book of Exodus—containing the Exodus and the giving of the Torah—is the goal of creation.”
Creation reaches fulfillment only when Israel becomes a nation through the Exodus and receives the Torah.
“And this comes to teach that the redemption was a higher necessity.”
Redemption is not merely for Israel’s benefit but fulfills a divine need within creation.
“For all that He created, He created for His glory.”
All existence is designed to reveal God’s honor.
“And the essence of creation is for the sake of man, that he understand His greatness, goodness, and hidden wisdom, and thus thank and praise His Name.”
Human recognition and gratitude complete creation’s purpose.
“And this could not be realized until after the Exodus and the giving of the Torah.”
True spiritual awareness required national liberation and divine revelation.
“And it is said of Him: ‘Blessed and blessed-through the mouth of every soul.’”
Every soul is inherently a vessel for divine blessing.
“Meaning: every soul is a vessel to receive blessing and heavenly flow.”
The human soul is structured to receive divine influence.
“But the soul has an additional greatness: to give satisfaction to its Creator and draw blessing to all upper worlds.”
The soul not only receives but also radiates divine blessing outward.
“As it is written: ‘Give strength to God.’”
Humans can elevate divine presence through their actions.
“In truth, all is from Him.”
The empowerment humans offer is itself divinely granted.
“But God arranged it so that the lower beings add strength to the heavenly hosts.”
This is a divinely designed reciprocity between human action and heavenly vitality.
“But the soul is closed and hidden within the garment of the body.”
The body conceals the soul’s natural spiritual radiance.
“And to Israel were given keys to unlock the soul’s illumination.”
Israel received unique spiritual tools enabling the soul’s expression.
“This occurs through the mouth of every soul.”
The primary channel of soul-expression is through speech.
“These are the two covenants—the covenant of the tongue and the covenant of the flesh—in which lies the soul’s essential vitality.”
Speech and holiness of the body are the core conduits of spiritual life.
“The covenant of the flesh draws holy soul-power and is a vessel that holds blessing.”
Physical holiness attracts divine presence.
“And the covenant of the tongue—through Torah and prayer—opens the source of all blessings.”
Words of Torah and prayer activate divine flow.
“And this is what it means: ‘God gives strength to His people.’”
The strength given is the Torah.
“The Torah, which is called strength.”
The Torah empowers human spiritual action.
“And with this power it is said: ‘Give strength to God.’”
Through Torah, humans elevate divine presence.
“‘He will bless His people with peace’—this is the drawing of blessing downward, a vessel holding blessing.”
Peace is the ultimate container for divine blessing.
“This is the meaning of ‘Blessed and blessed-through the mouth of every soul.’”
The soul both receives and gives blessing.
“And truly this is fulfilled by every soul in its descent to this world.”
Every soul brings divine blessing upon entering life.
“And in its return to the upper world.”
The soul completes its cycle by returning with its accumulated holiness.
“But through human effort one merits these two aspects also in this world.”
With proper spiritual work, both receiving and giving divine blessing occur during earthly life.
“And these aspects are revealed on Shabbat, when there is an added soul and the soul shines.”
Shabbat intensifies the soul’s radiance.
“Therefore we say: ‘The soul of every living being shall bless.’”
On Shabbat the soul naturally expresses praise.
“As stated in the Zohar 138, Parashat Terumah.”
The mystical tradition affirms Shabbat’s unique soul-illumination.
“And this is ‘Remember’ and ‘Guard’ regarding Shabbat.”
Two complementary modes of Shabbat sanctification.
“‘Remember’ with mind and mouth, as it says: Remember the Shabbat day to sanctify it.”
Remembrance requires conscious speech and thought.
“Thus a person can add holiness to Shabbat.”
Human intention elevates the day.
“And ‘Guard’—to guard the blessing that descends to a person on Shabbat.”
Guarding preserves the divine influx.
“And all this was established through the Exodus.”
The Exodus made Shabbat’s spiritual structure possible.
“As it says: ‘And you shall remember that you were a slave… therefore He commanded you… to make the Shabbat day.’”
Shabbat is rooted in the experience of liberation.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that creation finds purpose in the Exodus and Torah; the soul is both a vessel and a source of blessing; two covenants and Shabbat unlock the soul’s hidden light, all made possible through redemption.
