Spiritual Refinement in Egypt
Exodus · Refinement · Redemption · Kriat Yam Suf · Midrash
“In the Midrash on Song of Songs: ‘Your teeth are like a flock of ewes that are shorn.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash that interprets this verse as referring to Israel's refinement.
“Fixed words: the spoils of Egypt and the spoils of the sea.”
The Midrash explains that these ‘set words’ allude to two stages of receiving spoils—first in Egypt, then at the sea.
“That when they ascended from the washing after the Song, all their sins were forgiven.”
After the Song at the Sea, Israel experienced a spiritual purification that cleansed them of all wrongdoing.
“The matter is that the purpose of the exile was to refine the holy sparks that had been absorbed within them.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that exile serves a redemptive function: extracting hidden holiness embedded within the nations.
“And this is what the Holy One promised our forefather: ‘Afterward they shall leave with great wealth.’”
The promise to Abraham refers not only to material wealth but to spiritual recovery of these sparks.
“But this spoils required refinement from the dross.”
The spoils taken from Egypt contained admixtures of impurity that needed further purification.
“And through the splitting of the Sea, the spoils were refined from all impurity.”
At the Sea, the spiritual residue was completely separated out, leaving only pure holiness.
“This is [the meaning of] their ascending from the washing.”
The ‘washing’ symbolizes this full purification process.
“Therefore it first says ‘Speak, please,’ for the Israelites were afraid to take the spoils since they were mixed with impurity.”
Moses had to urge them to take the spoils because they sensed its incomplete refinement.
“But when they were washed in the Sea, they desired the spoils even more.”
Once the purification occurred, the people recognized the holiness within the spoils and sought them willingly.
“As it is written: ‘Moses made Israel journey,’ and the Sages said: he forced them away from the Sea, as Rashi explains.”
Israel clung to the purified spoils so strongly that Moses had to compel them to continue their journey.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the spoils of Egypt required spiritual refinement. This process culminated at the Sea, where Israel was purified, the spoils were cleansed of impurity, and the people—now sensing their holiness—desired them fully.
