Revealing Redemption Through Speech

Pesach · תרנ"ד (1893) · Essay 3

Four Cups · Geula · Bris HaLashon · Wine · Shabbat

The matter of the four cups corresponding to the four expressions of redemption is also to reveal the covenant of the tongue.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the four cups are not only symbols of redemption but are meant to uncover the sanctity embedded in speech itself.

And there are five points of articulation of the mouth.

Speech is rooted in five physical sources, each representing a dimension of expression connected to spiritual forces.

Therefore redemption is needed, for every opening requires redemption, as said above; the first source is attached to the root, and the other four require redemption.

Only one aspect of human expression is inherently aligned with its divine root; the rest must be purified and redeemed to serve holiness.

As in the matter of “and from there it was divided into four heads,” which are the aspect of the four kingdoms.

The division into four reflects the fragmentation symbolized by the four exiles, which stand in need of reunification.

And everything that exists in the world exists in the year and in the soul.

The Sefat Emet repeats his axiom: all dimensions of reality mirror one another—cosmic, temporal, and personal.

And as explained earlier in Parashat Metzora regarding the river that flows out of Eden.

The primordial river symbolizes the flow of inner life that becomes divided and must be returned to its source.

And wine is a hint to redemption and the revelation of the inner essence, as it is said: “When wine enters, secrets emerge.”

Wine represents the uncovering of what is hidden—the very process of redemption itself.

And it is written: “And new wine shall cause maidens to speak,” meaning the opening of the inner self, which is the essence of redemption.

Redemption is defined as the unlocking of inner potential and spiritual voice.

And in the Exodus, Israel merited the revelation of the covenants of the tongue and of the flesh.

The liberation from Egypt brought forth both spiritual and physical covenants into the open.

Therefore the mouth speaks.

Passover becomes the “festival of the mouth,” the freeing of speech rooted in redeemed expression.

Therefore the sages instituted sanctifying the Sabbath over wine, as it is said: “Remember it over wine.”

Wine recalls the Exodus and reawakens the redeemed power of speech each week.

The reason is that it is a remembrance of the Exodus, the freedom through which Israel merited the covenant of tongue and speech.

The sanctification of Shabbat reenacts the liberation that restored holy speech to Israel.

Therefore Shabbat is called “testimony,” and it was given to Israel as a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt.

Shabbat serves as a perpetual witness to the redemptive moment when holiness of speech and covenant was bestowed.

Summary: The four cups of Passover reflect the redemption of speech, aligned with the five sources of articulation. Wine symbolizes the revelation of inner essence, mirroring the Exodus, which restored both spiritual and physical covenants. Shabbat, sanctified through wine, continually recalls this liberation.
