On the pasuk "Remember the day of Shabbos" (Shemos 20:8), Chazal expounded that the Aseres HaDibros (Ten Commandments) were given on Shabbos.

The Torah's command to "remember" Shabbos is linked to the fact that the Dibros, the giving of the Torah, took place on Shabbos.

"Remember" — at the very essence of the day.

The mitzvah of "zachor" attaches to the inner essence and substance of the day of Shabbos itself.

For it is brought in the holy Zohar: "And He blessed… the seventh day" — since no manna was found on it, what blessing was found in it? Rather, all the blessings depend upon the seventh day.

The Zohar asks: if no food (manna) came down on Shabbos, in what does its blessing consist? The answer: Shabbos is the hidden source from which all the blessings of the other days flow.

The explanation: the essence of blessing and the sustaining of the world is the Torah, as it is said, the world was created for the sake of the Torah, which is called "reishis" (the beginning).

The true blessing that keeps the world in existence is Torah, for which (called "reishis") the entire world was brought into being.

He looked into the Torah and created [the world].

The Midrash teaches that Hashem used the Torah as the blueprint of creation.

And during all six days of action, the "saying" (the divine utterance) was clothed in deed.

On the six weekdays, Hashem's creative word became enclothed and concretized within physical acts of creation.

"Let there be light," "Let there be a firmament."

Each divine utterance produced a tangible created reality.

As it is written, "By the word of Hashem the heavens were made." (Tehillim 33:6)

The pasuk confirms that the divine word was translated into the actual making of the heavens.

If so, the "deed" is a level below the essence of the utterance.

The physical product of creation is one rung lower than the pure divine word that produced it.

But on the seventh day it is written "and He blessed" — and this is an utterance without any enclothing in deed, and it is the root of the Torah.

The blessing of Shabbos is pure divine "speech" that never descended into physical action; it remains at the exalted source, which is the root of Torah itself.

Therefore the world is not worthy to receive the blessing of Shabbos.

Because the Shabbos blessing is so lofty and unclothed in the physical, the natural world as such cannot contain it.

Only Bnei Yisrael [can receive it].

Bnei Yisrael alone are fit to absorb this transcendent blessing of Shabbos.

As it is said, "Knesses Yisrael shall be your partner (ben zugcha)."

The Midrash relates that when Shabbos protested it had no partner, Hashem answered that Knesses Yisrael would be its mate — Bnei Yisrael are paired with Shabbos.

By the power of the Torah that was given to us.

It is specifically the Torah given to Bnei Yisrael that empowers them to be the partner of Shabbos and receive its blessing.

"And I have placed My words in your mouth" (Yeshayahu 51:16) — the very essence of the Dibros, without any enclothing.

Hashem placed the unclothed essence of His word directly into the mouths of Bnei Yisrael through the Torah — the same pure "utterance" that is the blessing of Shabbos.

And this is the testimony of Shabbos.

Shabbos bears witness to this exalted, unclothed source — the Torah given to Bnei Yisrael.

As it is said, Shabbos should be made entirely Torah.

The proper avodah of Shabbos is to devote the whole day to Torah, matching its essence as the root of Torah.

For there is no melachah (forbidden labor) with it, as explained elsewhere regarding this.

Since Shabbos is pure divine "speech" unclothed in deed, it is fittingly free of all melachah — the cessation of work mirrors the day's transcendence of physical action.

Summary: The blessing of Shabbos is not a material gift but the pure, unclothed divine "word" — the root of Torah — which never descended into physical deed as the six days' creations did. Because it is so transcendent, only Bnei Yisrael, empowered by the Torah placed in their mouths, can receive it. This is why Shabbos is bound to Torah and free of melachah: the cessation of labor reflects the day's essence as speech above action.
