Revealing Divine Truth Through Story
Exodus · Redemption · Speech · Divine Presence · Testimony
One might think from the beginning of the month, etc.
The teaching begins by referencing the midrashic phrase that one could imagine starting earlier, leading into the explanation that follows.
“Because of this” — at the time when there is matzah and maror, etc.
This clarifies that the mitzvah of telling the Exodus story is bound to a specific moment when the symbols of redemption are present.
The idea is that there is a commandment to recount the Exodus every day.
Daily remembrance is a core obligation, extending beyond Passover night itself.
For the Children of Israel were created only to recount and testify to the Creator, as it is written: “This people I have formed for Myself…”
Israel’s essential purpose is to reveal divine truth in the world.
But before the redemption they cannot recount and clarify the honor of His kingship in the world because the wicked conceal the light and truth.
Exile prevents proper testimony, for spiritual obstruction hides God’s presence.
Therefore, after the redemption they are obligated to tell of the Exodus, for now the mouths of Israel are opened.
Redemption enables authentic speech and revelation.
As it is said that previously the faculty of speech was in exile.
The capacity for divine expression was suppressed.
Meaning that the power of the Supreme Guidance was not revealed in actuality until He showed in the Exodus that He nullified all nature with a mighty hand.
The miracles displayed the higher divine order overriding natural law.
And it is stated: He created His world with a book, a scribe, and a story.
The world itself is structured as text, reader, and narrative.
For truly all of God’s works are for His purpose.
Creation is inherently oriented toward revealing God.
It is taught in the Midrash: “For His testimony.”
The world serves as testimony to Him.
In order to testify about Him, as it is written: “You shall not bear false witness,” etc.
Human testimony must reflect divine truth.
The wise person who contemplates truth recognizes and sees through creation the wisdom and kindness of God, as it is written: “The heavens declare…”
The natural world proclaims divine wisdom to those who perceive it.
Thus creation is like a book.
The world presents meaning that can be read.
But through the human being the testimony is brought from potential into actuality, and he is the mouth that recounts, reading this book, and is called the scribe.
Human speech actualizes creation’s testimony.
But not at all times can one recount; only at moments when the illumination is revealed does the essence of the story become possible.
Divine revelation determines when true testimony can occur.
And these are the three dimensions: world, time, and soul.
These three together form the conditions for revelation.
From all these the story is completed.
The full testimony requires all three elements in harmony.
And this is the meaning of “Because of this”: now the act — the mitzvot of matzah and maror — and the time are designated for it, and the mouth of the Israelite is opened; therefore it is called Pesach — “the mouth speaks,” as the books say.
On this night, all conditions align so that Israel’s testimony can emerge fully into speech.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s purpose is to bear witness to God, yet true testimony requires redemption, revelation, and the alignment of world, time, and soul. Passover night uniquely enables the mouth to speak, transforming creation’s latent testimony into living narrative.
