Spiritual Ascent Through Miracles

“How many good levels the Omnipresent has bestowed upon us…”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that these ‘levels’ are spiritual stages that God granted through the miracles performed for Israel.
That is, these are elevations and spiritual rungs: all the miracles that the Blessed One performed for us are counsel and pathways to repair ourselves through them, in order to cleave to Him—such as the Exodus, the splitting of the sea, the manna, the Torah, and Shabbat.
The miracles are not merely wonders but instructions, each one offering a method for refining the self and drawing nearer to God.
And this is the meaning of “Dayeinu”: that each stage, by itself, was already exalted and sufficient for us to be elevated and repaired.
Each miracle alone could have brought Israel to spiritual completion; all the more so the accumulation of them.
Yet we, after all this divine counsel, did not return to Him in complete repentance.
The Sefat Emet emphasizes Israel’s failure to fully utilize the spiritual opportunities embedded in the miracles.
And in this telling we thank Him that He fulfilled His promise to Jacob: “I will surely bring you up.”
Retelling the story becomes an act of gratitude, acknowledging God’s loyalty to His covenant.
Meaning that through the Exodus they would later ascend to all of these good levels.
The Exodus is the gateway enabling ascent through all subsequent spiritual stages.
Another explanation: “also up” teaches that the ascent of the Exodus is a matter in which there are always additional ascents, as stated earlier regarding “whoever increases in telling…”
Exodus elevates continually; its spiritual ascent is endless and grows through ever-deeper retelling.
The Sefat Emet teaches that each miracle of the Exodus is a spiritual rung meant to elevate Israel, that Dayeinu reflects the sufficiency of each stage, and that the promise of continual ascent remains ever‑unfolding through recounting the story.
