Redemptive Permanence Through Repetition
Redemption · Exodus · Red Sea · Shabbat · Divine Providence
The matter of the splitting of the sea: “Speak to the Children of Israel, and let them return...”
The Sefat Emet introduces the idea that the command for Israel to turn back before the Sea had a deeper spiritual purpose.
It appears that this was a preparation for future generations.
He teaches that the events at the sea were not only historical, but established a spiritual pattern for all time.
Like the principle that Scripture repeats something in order to make it essential.
Just as halachic repetition creates lasting obligation, so too the repeated experience of constriction and salvation formed a permanent spiritual reality.
For a matter performed twice becomes established; therefore the redemption from Egypt occurred twice.
The Exodus and the splitting of the sea together constituted a “double redemption,” creating enduring spiritual liberation.
And this is the meaning of “Those Egyptians whom you have seen... you shall see them no more.”
The verse signals that this second encounter with Egypt was meant to finalize the redemption.
Meaning that Moses answered them not to complain about having been put into hardship a second time.
Moses explains that the renewed danger was purposeful and not a regression.
For what you have seen was in order that you should never again see them—so that this redemption be everlasting.
The second confrontation assured that Egypt’s spiritual power over Israel would be removed forever.
And it is stated in the Midrash that the seventh day of Passover is like the holy Sabbath.
The day of the splitting of the sea mirrors Shabbat in its spiritual function.
And Shabbat sustains the creation that was formed in six days.
Shabbat preserves and confirms the work of creation.
So too, the splitting of the sea is the sustaining of the redemption from Egypt.
Keriat Yam Suf functions as the element that made the Exodus permanent and complete.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the splitting of the sea served as a second, confirming act of redemption—mirroring how repetition creates permanence in halachah. Just as Shabbat sustains creation, the seventh day of Passover, marked by the sea’s splitting, sustains and completes the redemption from Egypt for all generations.
