Unity of Upper and Lower Worlds
Redemption · Song of the Sea · Shabbat · Divine Alignment · Spiritual Elevation
Rashi teaches that the entire Song is doubled: “Ga’oh ga’ah,” “Your right hand, Your right hand,” “Who is like You, Who is like You,” etc.
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that the Song at the Sea is expressed in doubled phrases, revealing a pattern of upper and lower worlds acting in harmony.
And it is likewise stated with regard to the holy Sabbath that all its matters are doubled.
Sabbath also embodies this doubling, indicating the union of two planes of reality.
For the seventh day of Passover resembles the Sabbath, as the Midrash on the end of Parashat Bo teaches.
The seventh day of Pesach shares the spiritual structure of Shabbat, where the worlds align.
The matter is that the essence of salvation is in its upper root, which occurred at the splitting of the sea, as the Midrash says: “Israel saw Egypt dead”—meaning the minister of Egypt above.
True redemption begins in the higher world; at the Sea, the spiritual force of Egypt was nullified, enabling physical redemption.
Therefore “God saved Israel on that day” specifically.
The salvation occurred simultaneously above and below, making “that day” a precise moment of full alignment.
For the salvation was both above and below.
The miracle unfolded across both realms at once.
And Israel saw, through the holy spirit, all the rectifications done above on their behalf.
The people perceived the spiritual repairs occurring in the higher world.
Thus, “the exaltation of God is in their throats, and a double‑edged sword in their hands.”
Their praise activated a double effect—impacting both realms like a two‑edged sword.
It cuts with two edges—above and below.
Their spiritual power operated in both planes.
“Terror and dread shall fall upon them”; the Sages said: dread upon the near ones and fear upon the distant ones.
The heavenly “near ones” (angels) experienced dread, which then caused fear among the earthly “distant ones.”
The hint is that the heavenly ministers are called “near,” and dread fell upon them, producing fear among the “distant,” below.
The upper shift triggered a corresponding effect in the lower world.
As the Gemara says: one who is frightened—even if he sees nothing, his mazal sees.
One’s spiritual root perceives the higher movement even when the physical senses do not.
And this is the essence of the Song: when one merits straightening the lower realm with the upper.
The Song emerges from harmonizing the two layers of existence.
As it is written: “God made the human being upright.”
Humanity was created aligned between heaven and earth.
But through sin many calculations arose.
Sin fractured this alignment and introduced confusion.
But Israel, who rectified the sin, are called Jeshurun (“upright ones”).
They restored the original straightness.
They therefore merited the Song.
Their restored alignment allowed them to sing.
And so it is on the holy Sabbath: “It is good to give thanks.”
Shabbat renews this alignment and opens the gates of praise.
For then the world is elevated and an extra soul descends.
Shabbat raises creation and grants added spiritual sensitivity.
And there is a bonding and connection of the lower realms to the upper.
Shabbat reunifies what was divided, restoring full harmony between heaven and earth.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the doubled language of the Song and of Shabbat reflects the union of upper and lower worlds. At the Sea, salvation occurred simultaneously above and below, and Israel perceived the heavenly rectifications. Song arises when the lower realm is aligned with the upper, a state restored by Israel and renewed each Shabbat.
