Avraham's supernatural Torah supersedes Noach's nature
It is taught in the Mishnah: through ten generations from Adam to Noach, all the generations were provoking [Hashem], until He brought upon them the waters of the Flood; and from Noach to Avraham they were provoking, until Avraham Avinu came and received the reward of them all. (Avos 5:2)
The Sefas Emes begins from the Mishnah's two sets of ten generations of sin, and zeroes in on the phrase that Avraham "received the reward of them all" — which he will now explain.
For Noach, although he was a tzaddik, was not able to withstand the wickedness of the wicked, and what he would rectify —
Noach was righteous, but his tzidkus was not strong enough to stand firm against the surrounding evil; whatever good he built up was vulnerable.
— the wicked would ruin, until he had to hide himself in the Teivah (Ark), and they perished in the Flood.
The resha'im undid Noach's efforts, forcing him to seclude himself in the Ark; he could only be saved by withdrawal, while the wicked were destroyed.
But Avraham strengthened himself in his righteousness and prevailed over the deeds of the wicked, and concerning this it is written, "Many waters cannot extinguish the love." (Shir HaShirim 8:7)
Avraham did the opposite of withdrawing: he grew stronger in the face of evil and overcame it. The "many waters" of wickedness could not quench his burning ahavah for Hashem.
And it is known that such is the way of fire: when the water cannot extinguish it, it grows even stronger through the water. And this is "he received the reward of them all," for he was further elevated and strengthened in his righteousness through the wickedness of the wicked.
Like a fire that water only intensifies, Avraham's avodah was fueled by the opposition around him. That is why he "received the reward of all" — the very wickedness of those generations became the means of his own elevation.
And in truth this is like what they said: an aveirah extinguishes a mitzvah, but an aveirah does not extinguish Torah; and from Avraham began the "two thousand years of Torah," which is an aspect above nature.
Sin can quench a mitzvah, but not the eternal light of Torah. With Avraham began the era of "Torah," a supernatural dimension — and that is why his righteousness, rooted above nature, could not be extinguished by the "waters" of sin.
And so it was in the order of the generations, like what they said: derech eretz preceded the Torah.
The historical sequence mirrors a spiritual order — the natural way of the world (derech eretz) came first, and only afterward the above-nature dimension of Torah, beginning with Avraham.
Now Noach sustained the world and nature, and this was the covenant of Noach — to sustain the world, as it is written, "As long as the earth endures… [seedtime and harvest…] shall not cease." (Bereishis 8:22)
Noach's role and bris belong to the realm of nature: to keep the natural order of the world running steadily and unbroken.
Afterward came Avraham Avinu and drew into the world the way of the Torah, which is above nature and time, and this remained for all generations in Bnei Yisrael.
Avraham introduced a new, supernatural channel — the way of Torah, which transcends nature and time — and this became the permanent inheritance of Bnei Yisrael.
For the covenant of Noach was for [its] time and hour, and the covenant of Avraham Avinu came and superseded the covenant of Noach.
Noach's bris was bound to time, a temporary order of nature; Avraham's bris, belonging to the timeless, came and overrode it.
Therefore it is taught in the Mishnah: one who vows [to forbid himself benefit] from "the sons of Noach" is permitted [benefit] from Yisrael. (Nedarim 3:11)
Halacha itself reflects this: Bnei Yisrael are no longer classed simply as "sons of Noach," because Avraham's covenant began something new.
For they are not called "the sons of Noach."
Bnei Yisrael have transcended the category of "sons of Noach" entirely.
For from the Avos a new edifice began, as it is written, "And I will make you into a great nation" (Bereishis 12:2) — a new creation, as above.
With the Avos a wholly new building was begun — "I will make you a great nation" — a beri'ah chadashah, a new creation that lifts Bnei Yisrael beyond the Noachide order.
And this is the edifice of Bnei Yisrael, who are called "children of the World to Come," above the way of nature, as above.
That new structure is Bnei Yisrael themselves — called "children of olam haba," rooted in the supernatural realm of Torah that stands above the natural order.
Summary: Noach, though a tzaddik, could only survive evil by withdrawing into the Ark, for his righteousness belonged to the realm of nature, which his bris was meant to sustain. Avraham, by contrast, grew stronger through opposition — like fire intensified by water — because his avodah drew from the Torah, which is above nature and time and cannot be extinguished by sin. With Avraham a "new creation" began: Bnei Yisrael, no longer mere "sons of Noach" but "children of the World to Come," rooted above the natural order.
