Carrying Torah into worldly life

In the Midrash: "I have given you a good acquisition (lekach tov)... do not forsake My Torah" (Mishlei 4:2) — "do not forsake the purchase (mekach)," etc.

The Sefas Emes opens with the Midrash that plays on "lekach" (teaching/acquisition): the Torah is a precious purchase that one is warned never to abandon.

"Wherever you go, make for Me one small chamber (kiton)," etc.

The Midrash's parable: the King tells His beloved to take a small room of His along wherever she goes — meaning, keep some portion of Torah with you in every place and activity.

The matter is that beforehand it is written: "and he was there with Hashem forty days and forty nights" (Shemos 34:28).

Moshe's forty days with Hashem represent a total, all-consuming immersion in Torah.

That Moshe Rabbeinu, alav hashalom, became entirely Torah.

Moshe reached the level of being wholly Torah, with nothing of the mundane in him — the loftiest path.

But it is taught: many tried to act like Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (devoting themselves entirely to Torah) and did not succeed; only the way of Rabbi Yishmael — "conduct yourself with them in the way of derech eretz (worldly involvement)" — that is, as it is written: "in all your ways know Him" (Mishlei 3:6).

Not everyone can sustain Moshe's or Rashbi's total immersion; most must follow Rabbi Yishmael's path of combining Torah with worldly life, sanctifying every activity by "knowing Him in all your ways."

And in the Zohar HaKadosh: "and you shall speak of them, when you sit [in your house and when you walk on the way]..." (Devarim 6:7).

The Zohar reads this verse as a directive to carry Torah into every setting of daily life.

To conduct all of one's actions according to the Torah.

The goal of this path is that the Torah guide and govern every one of one's deeds, even the worldly ones.

And so it was with Klal Yisrael, for they could not be drawn after the level of Moshe Rabbeinu.

The nation as a whole could not reach Moshe's all-consuming level of "becoming entirely Torah."

But at least "do not forsake," as it is written: "it is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it" (Mishlei 3:18).

Even those who cannot fully immerse must at least hold fast and never let go of the Torah entirely.

"Make for Me one small chamber" — to have at least some illumination of the Torah in all one's actions.

The "small chamber" means keeping at least a measure of Torah's light present in every deed and pursuit of daily life.

So as not to become separated from the Torah.

The purpose is to never become wholly detached from Torah, even amid worldly involvement.

And then all of Yisrael has deveikus (attachment) to the level of Moshe Rabbeinu.

By keeping that small portion of Torah-light in everything, even ordinary Jews remain connected to Moshe's exalted level.

And the verse compares them to one another, as it is written: "and they shall make for Me a Mikdash... according to all that I show you" (Shemos 25:8-9).

The Torah equates the Mishkan built below with the heavenly vision shown to Moshe, linking the two levels.

The meaning is: although the Mishkan is a level below the level of the visions Moshe saw on the mountain.

The physical Mishkan is a lower, earthly grade compared to the sublime heavenly forms Moshe beheld on Har Sinai.

Nevertheless, "and I will dwell [among them]... according to all that I show you."

Despite being a lower level, the Divine Presence rests in the Mishkan just as in Moshe's lofty vision — the lower is bound to and includes the higher.

And these two levels are the aspect of Shabbos and the weekdays (yemei ha-ma'aseh).

The two grades — Moshe's heavenly immersion and the lower Mishkan/worldly involvement — correspond to Shabbos and the six workdays.

On Shabbos one becomes entirely Torah.

Shabbos is the time to live wholly in Torah, mirroring Moshe's level of "becoming entirely Torah."

And the level of Moshe Rabbeinu is revealed.

On Shabbos that exalted, all-encompassing Torah-level of Moshe becomes accessible and manifest.

And on the weekdays, "make for Me one small chamber," as above.

During the workweek, immersed in worldly affairs, one fulfills the avodah by keeping that "small chamber" of Torah-light present in every deed — thereby staying bound, even then, to Moshe's level.

Summary: There are two levels of connection to Torah. The highest is Moshe Rabbeinu's, who during his forty days "became entirely Torah" — but most people, like the nation as a whole, cannot sustain this total immersion (the path of Rashbi). For them there is Rabbi Yishmael's path of "in all your ways know Him": keeping at least a "small chamber" of Torah-light alive in every worldly activity, never becoming detached from Torah, so that even they stay attached to Moshe's level. These two grades mirror the relationship between Moshe's heavenly vision and the lower Mishkan, and between Shabbos — when one lives entirely in Torah — and the weekdays, when one carries that small but constant portion of Torah-light into all of life.
