Shabbos as a hidden gift above nature

"However, My Shabbosos you shall keep."

The Sefas Emes opens on the posuk (Shemos 31:13) commanding the keeping of Shabbos, set right beside the work of the Mishkan.

Rashi explains: to exclude Shabbos from the work of the Mishkan.

Rashi reads the word "ach" (however) as a limitation: even the holy labor of building the Mishkan does not override Shabbos.

For it is taught in the Gemara: "I have a good gift in My treasure house, and I wish to give it to Yisrael — go and inform them," as it is written, "to know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you."

The Gemara (Shabbos 10b) says Shabbos is a precious gift from Hashem's hidden treasury, which He asked Moshe to make known to Bnei Yisrael — for through it they "know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you."

The meaning of "in My treasure house" is that it is above nature and cannot be revealed in the world, like the hidden light (or haganuz) stored away for the tzaddikim.

Shabbos belongs to Hashem's "treasury" because it is above the natural order and cannot fully manifest within this world — comparable to the or haganuz, the primordial light hidden away for the righteous in the World to Come.

Now regarding the mann it is written, "on Shabbos there shall be none of it," and the Zohar HaKadosh asks: why was no mann found on it? Because all blessings depend upon it.

The Torah says no mann fell on Shabbos. The Zohar explains the paradox: precisely because all blessing hangs upon Shabbos, its blessing is too exalted to descend into a physical form like the mann.

And they are not in a revealed state.

The blessings of Shabbos exist on a hidden plane and do not appear openly within the physical world.

And even though the mann was the food that the ministering angels eat.

The mann was itself a highly spiritual substance — "the bread that the angels eat."

Nevertheless, when it came into the world and clothed itself in physicality, it did not descend on Shabbos.

Even so, once the mann took on a physical garb to enter this world, it could not come down on Shabbos — for Shabbos is beyond physical clothing.

For the blessing of Shabbos cannot clothe itself in physicality at all.

The blessing of Shabbos is so elevated that it simply cannot be enclothed in any material form.

Therefore He said to Moshe, "Go and inform them."

Because Shabbos cannot reveal itself materially, it must be made known specifically through Moshe — that is, through the Torah.

And through the power of the Torah — the power of Moshe Rabbeinu — Bnei Yisrael have deveikus (attachment) on Shabbos.

It is the power of Torah, transmitted by Moshe, that grants Bnei Yisrael deveikus to the supernal light of Shabbos that nature itself cannot hold.

And likewise the work of the Mishkan.

The same dynamic of hidden light enclothed in physical action applies to the building of the Mishkan.

Although it is the root of the work of Creation — just as in the six days of Creation the light was clothed in nature, and afterward the holiness of Shabbos is above the clothing of nature.

The Mishkan parallels maaseh bereishis: during the six days the Divine light was clothed within nature, while the kedushah of Shabbos stands above any such garment of nature.

So too in all the work of the Mishkan the light was clothed within that labor, while Shabbos is above this clothing; therefore He said, "between Me and Bnei Yisrael it is a sign."

The 39 melachos of building the Mishkan are the channels through which the Divine light is clothed in action; but Shabbos is higher than all that. That is why Shabbos is called a direct "sign between Me and Bnei Yisrael" — an unmediated bond.

For "I am Hashem who sanctifies you" — without any intermediary.

On Shabbos the sanctification comes directly from Hashem with no intervening "garment" of nature or labor — a holiness given straight from Him to Bnei Yisrael.

Summary: Shabbos overrides even the building of the Mishkan because it is a "good gift" from Hashem's hidden treasury, above nature like the or haganuz. Just as no mann fell on Shabbos — its blessing being too exalted to clothe itself in physical form — so too the light enclothed in the labor of Creation and of the Mishkan is surpassed by Shabbos, which stands above all such garments. Therefore Shabbos had to be made known through Moshe and the Torah, granting Bnei Yisrael deveikus to it, and it is "a sign between Me and you," for on Shabbos Hashem sanctifies His people directly, with no intermediary.
