Divine Presence Through Israel

איתא בגמרא עדות הוא לישראל ששכינה שורה בישראל בנר מערבי שממנה מתחיל ובה היה מסיים.

It is stated in the Gemara: “It is testimony for Israel that the Shekhinah rests among them — in the western lamp, from which the lighting began and with which it ended.”

The Sefat Emet explains that the western lamp served as a sign that the Divine Presence dwells within Israel.

זה העדות שגילוי שכינה בעולם הוא רק ע"י הכנת בני ישראל שהם פנימיות הבריאה.

This is the testimony: that revelation of the Shekhinah in the world is only through the preparation of Israel, who are the inner essence of creation.

Divine revelation depends on Israel’s spiritual readiness, because they represent the inner core of the world.

ובאמת זה העדות הוא גם בגלות כמ"ש משכן העדות שנתמשכן בית המקדש בשני חרבנות בשביל עונות בנ"י.

And in truth, this testimony remains even in exile, as it is said: “The Tabernacle of Testimony,” for the Temple was taken as collateral through its two destructions because of the sins of Israel.

Even destruction and exile testify to the same principle: the state of the Temple reflects the state of Israel.

זה עצמו העדות גם עתה שכשאין בני ישראל מתוקנים כראוי א"א להיות גילוי שכינה בעולם.

This itself is the testimony even now: when Israel are not properly rectified, the Shekhinah cannot be revealed in the world.

The absence of revelation is evidence of the spiritual state of Israel.

וכאשר מתוקנים נפשות בני ישראל נבנה המשכן והמקדש והאיר לכל העולם.

And when the souls of Israel are rectified, the Mishkan and Temple are built, and they illuminate the entire world.

The rebuilding of the Temple is tied to inner spiritual repair.

וגם זה אמת כשנבנה ביהמ"ק בזה מתחזק נפשות בנ"י.

And this too is true: when the Temple is built, the souls of Israel are strengthened.

The relationship is reciprocal — Israel uplift the Temple, and the Temple uplifts Israel.

שהמקדש ובנ"י עדים זה על זה.

For the Temple and Israel testify about one another.

Each reflects the spiritual condition of the other.

ולכן קורין בחנוכה פרשת הנשיאים דכתיב ויהי ביום כלות משה להקים כו' ויקריבו נשיאי ישראל כשנגמר כל הקמת המשכן כמו כן נתרוממו נשיאי בני ישראל וכוונו לדעת עליון.

Therefore on Chanuka we read the portion of the tribal princes, as it is written: “And it was on the day Moses finished erecting…” — when the Mishkan’s construction was completed, the princes were elevated and aligned themselves with supernal understanding.

Their offerings represent Israel’s heightened spiritual clarity at the Mishkan’s completion.

כמ"ש במדרש קח מאתם מאתם היה.

As the Midrash says: “Take from them” — it was from them.

The initiative and insight for the offerings came from the princes themselves.

פירוש קח הוא תורה כמ"ש לקח טוב נתתי.

Meaning “take” refers to Torah, as it is written: “A good teaching I have given you.”

The offerings were rooted in deep Torah intuition.

והם תיקנו סדר והוראת שעה מה שלא נתגלה למרע"ה.

And they established an order and a temporary ruling that had not been revealed to Moses our teacher.

Their spiritual insight unveiled something even Moses did not receive explicitly.

כמ"ש שם במדרש שחשש משה רע"ה שנסתלקה ממנו הנבואה ע"ש.

As the Midrash states there: Moses feared that prophecy had departed from him.

Moses momentarily felt eclipsed by their spiritual elevation.

ובאמת בנס דחנוכה נשאר קצת זכר מבית המקדש לזמן הגלות האחרון כמ"ש דורש אין לה דבעיא דרישה.

And in truth, in the miracle of Chanuka there remains a small remnant of the Temple for the final exile, as it is said: “She has none to seek her” — meaning she requires seeking.

The Chanuka light is a surviving trace of the Temple’s holiness in exile.

וצריך האדם לזכור בימים הללו כי בנין ביהמ"ק תלוי בתיקון נפשות בני ישראל.

And a person must remember in these days that the building of the Temple depends on the rectification of the souls of Israel.

The external structure reflects internal spiritual work.

ביהמ"ק הוא שורש כל העולם שקדם לכל הבריאה כמ"ש מרום מראשון מקום מקדשינו.

The Temple is the root of the entire world, preceding creation, as it is written: “Exalted from the beginning is the place of our Sanctuary.”

The Temple exists on a primordial plane prior to the world’s formation.

וכמו כן בנ"י עלו במחשבה קודם הבריאה.

And likewise Israel arose in thought before creation.

Israel and the Temple share primordial origins.

וזה עצמו הרמז ממנה מתחיל ובה היה מסיים.

And this is the hint: “From it he began, and with it he finished.”

Israel are both the first and last in the Divine plan.

שבנ"י הם הראשונים ואחרונים לכל הבריאה והם קיום כל הבריאה.

For Israel are the first and last of all creation, and they sustain all creation.

The world’s endurance depends on Israel’s spiritual state.

והוא בחי' הש"ק שבו נגמר הבריאה.

And this is the aspect of Shabbat, through which creation was completed.

Shabbat represents the inner completion of existence, parallel to Israel’s role.

וסוף מעשה במחשבה תחלה.

And the end of the deed is rooted in the initial thought.

The final revelation corresponds to the primordial intention.

וכל אלה בחי' אור הגנוז שמאיר מסוף העולם ועד סופו שהוא קודם לכל הבריאה וסוף כל הבריאה.

And all these are aspects of the Hidden Light, which shines from one end of the world to the other, preceding all creation and concluding all creation.

This light unifies the beginning and the end of the cosmic process.

ומעין זה באדם עצמו בחי' ברית מילה שהוא שורש כל האדם.

And a reflection of this in a person is the covenant of circumcision, which is the root of all human identity.

The sign of the covenant mirrors the cosmic structure.

ממנה מתחיל ובה מסיים שהוא מושך הארה מן המוח לעשות תולדות בעולם וכל הציור בגוף הוא רמז אל הפנימיות.

From it he begins and with it he ends — it draws illumination from the mind to produce offspring in the world, and every physical form is a hint to the inner essence.

The bodily sign reveals a spiritual process linking thought to creation.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanuka reveals the enduring inner connection between Israel, the Temple, and creation itself. The Temple’s state mirrors Israel’s soul, and the Hidden Light unites the origin and culmination of the divine plan.
