"The Mishkan of Testimony" (Mishkan HaEidus).

The Sefas Emes examines why the Mishkan is called the dwelling of "testimony."

A testimony that the Holy One, blessed be He, forgave them, and so on.

The Midrash teaches that the Mishkan testified that Hashem had pardoned Bnei Yisrael for the cheit ha'egel (the golden calf).

Bnei Yisrael were created to testify about the Creator, may His Name be blessed, as it is said, "You are My witnesses" (Yeshayah 43:10).

The very purpose of Bnei Yisrael is to bear witness in the world to Hashem's existence and kingship.

And before the sin, the testimony was complete, such that His glory was fit to be publicized openly, as it will be in the future: "The earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem" (Yeshayah 11:9).

Before the cheit, the world was ready for Hashem's glory to be fully and openly revealed — the very state that will return in the days of Mashiach.

But the world was not worthy of this tikkun, and a delay was caused by the sin.

The cheit ha'egel held back this full revelation; the world was no longer fit to receive it openly.

Nevertheless, they repaired this testimony through the avodah of the Mishkan, in which the Shechinah rested and "the glory of Hashem filled the Mishkan" (Shemos 40:34).

Though the open revelation was delayed, the Mishkan restored a measure of it: the Shechinah dwelt there, concentrating Hashem's glory into one holy place.

For it is written, "The whole earth is full of His glory" (Yeshayah 6:3).

Hashem's glory in truth fills all the earth; the Mishkan made that hidden universal reality visible in one place.

And this is the avodah of man, as it is said: whatever the Holy One created, He created for His glory.

Man's task is to reveal Hashem's glory in creation — for everything was made to manifest that kavod.

"For My glory I created him" (Yeshayah 43:7).

Each person was created specifically to bring Hashem's glory to light.

And "kavod" (glory) is nothing other than Torah (Avos 6:3).

The "glory" that man reveals is identified with Torah — it is through Torah that Hashem's honor is brought forth.

That is to say: by the power of the Torah one is able to clarify and to bear this testimony.

Torah is the instrument by which a Jew can refine the world and testify to Hashem — the birur that reveals His glory.

And therefore [the Luchos] are called "the Tablets of Testimony" (Luchos HaEidus).

Because Torah is the means of testimony, the Luchos themselves bear the name "Tablets of Testimony."

And [the Luchos] were placed in the Mishkan, for the testimony was clarified by means of the building of the Mishkan.

The Luchos rested in the Mishkan precisely because the Mishkan's construction was the vehicle through which the testimony to Hashem was made manifest.

And this is the meaning of "[the glory] filled the Mishkan" — by means of the Mishkan, His glory was revealed in the world.

The phrase "filled the Mishkan" teaches that the Mishkan was the channel through which Hashem's hidden glory became revealed in the world.

And this itself is the testimony that He forgave them for the deed of the calf — in that they returned and repaired the testimony, to bear witness about Him, may His Name be blessed.

By rebuilding their capacity to testify to Hashem through the Mishkan, Bnei Yisrael showed — and Hashem confirmed — that the sin of the calf had been forgiven.

And it is taught in the Midrash that the Mishkan was the tikkun of the entire ma'aseh bereishis (work of creation); see there: "And [all the work] was completed…" — "the avodah…" — as it says, "And the heavens were completed" (Bereishis 2:1).

The completion of the Mishkan parallels the completion of creation; the same language of "finishing" links them, showing the Mishkan as the repair and fulfillment of the entire world.

And the matter is as stated in Midrash Bereishis on "Remove the dross from the silver" (Mishlei 25:4); see there on the verse "And [the heavens] were completed" — that when the waste is removed from the tohu va'vohu, a vessel emerges for the silversmith, as above.

Just as removing dross from silver yields a finished vessel, creation reached completion when the "waste" of tohu va'vohu was cleared away — leaving a refined world fit for Hashem's glory.

And now, at the time of the donating for the Mishkan, which was [done] with desire and yearning for His Name, may He be blessed, without any dross — therefore "a vessel emerged for the silversmith," for the entire purpose of the work of creation was completed.

The Mishkan was built with pure ratzon and yearning for Hashem, free of any ulterior "dross." That purity finished the very purpose of creation — producing the perfected vessel.

And this is the meaning of the Midrash on "Let lying lips be silenced" (Tehillim 31:19) — that He concealed [His glory] from His creatures, in that the tohu va'vohu covers it over and the holiness and chochmah that the Holy One placed in the work of creation are not recognizable; and it concludes there, "How abundant is Your goodness… that You have wrought for those who take refuge in You" (Tehillim 31:20); see there in Midrash Bereishis.

The hidden kedushah and chochmah of creation are concealed by the "tohu va'vohu," so that those who deny Hashem ("lying lips") seem to have a claim. Yet the verse closes by promising that the hidden good is reserved and revealed for "those who take refuge in You."

And here too, in the Midrash on the verse "And they brought [the Mishkan to Moshe]" (Shemos 39:33) — that they did not believe that they could make a Mishkan in which His glory would be revealed through the power of human handiwork.

Bnei Yisrael doubted that mere human labor could produce a structure worthy of housing the revealed glory of Hashem.

But "how abundant is Your goodness… for those who take refuge in You" — and they brought it from potential into actuality, so that the glory of Hashem filled the Mishkan; and all this [happened] when the ratzon was clarified, without dross, as it says, "Remove the dross from the silver."

Hashem's hidden goodness enabled those who trusted in Him to actualize the impossible: pure-hearted ratzon, free of self-interest, drew Hashem's glory into the Mishkan they built.

And then the tohu va'vohu and the admixture of good and evil that came about through the sin were uprooted, and then the glory of Hashem was revealed, and the hidden light (ohr ha'ganuz) in the work of creation became recognizable, as it says, "With chochmah Hashem founded the earth" (Mishlei 3:19).

The pure building of the Mishkan undid the confusion of good and evil caused by the cheit, allowing the concealed primordial light of creation to shine forth — the chochmah with which the world was founded.

And Bnei Yisrael, through the abundance of their yearning, attained the secret of the work of creation, which was revealed to them through the building of the Mishkan that the Holy One commanded.

Their intense yearning for Hashem opened to Bnei Yisrael the very sod of creation, made accessible through the divinely commanded labor of the Mishkan.

For all the labor [of the Mishkan] consists of hints to supernal matters.

Every detail of the Mishkan's construction encodes and points to lofty, hidden spiritual realities.

And about this it is written, "The secret of Hashem is for those who fear Him…" (Tehillim 25:14).

This hidden meaning of the Mishkan is the "sod Hashem" granted to those with yiras Shomayim.

As stated elsewhere, that Olam Haba is prepared for Bnei Yisrael.

The World to Come is the destined inheritance awaiting Bnei Yisrael.

But "and His covenant, to make it known to them" (Tehillim 25:14) — that they should have, even in this world, a revelation of what is destined for them, as it says, "[the good] You have wrought for those who take refuge in You"; and see the Zohar at the beginning of this parshah.

The continuation of the verse promises a foretaste: through His bris, Hashem grants even in olam hazeh a glimpse of the future revelation reserved for those who take refuge in Him.

And so it is with Shabbos, which is a "taste" (me'ein) of Olam Haba.

Shabbos likewise gives, within this world, a sample of the World to Come.

And so it is with all the mitzvos, which hint at supernal matters, for through the mitzvos one is able to cling to their root.

Every mitzvah, like the Mishkan and like Shabbos, encodes a higher reality, and performing it binds a person to its lofty root above — a foretaste of the future revelation.

Summary: The "Mishkan of Testimony" testifies that Hashem forgave the cheit ha'egel, for Bnei Yisrael were created to bear witness to Hashem — a task accomplished through Torah ("kavod"). Before the sin the world was ready for Hashem's glory to be revealed openly; the sin delayed it, but the Mishkan restored that revelation in concentrated form. Built with pure ratzon, free of "dross," the Mishkan completed the work of creation, undoing the tohu va'vohu and the admixture of good and evil, and revealing the hidden ohr ha'ganuz. Like Shabbos and every mitzvah, the Mishkan encodes supernal secrets and grants — even in this world — a foretaste of the future revelation reserved for those who take refuge in Hashem.
