Teshuvah as a new path into the world
It is brought in the Toras Kohanim: "And it was on the eighth day" — that there was joy before Him on high like the day on which heaven and earth were created; it is written there "and it was evening, etc." (Bereishis 1:5), and about that [eighth] day it is said, "Go out and see, [O daughters of Zion]" (Shir HaShirim 3:11).
The day the Mishkan was inaugurated brought a joy in Heaven comparable to the joy of creation itself, and the verse "go out and see" is applied to it.
For Bnei Yisrael now drew a new path into the world through the teshuvah that they did.
The eighth day followed the sin of the Golden Calf; through their repentance, Bnei Yisrael opened up a wholly new road in the world — the road of teshuvah.
And this was a preparation for the generations, as Chazal said: Bnei Yisrael were not fit for that deed [the Golden Calf], except to teach the way of teshuvah.
By right such a sin was beneath their level; it happened so as to establish teshuvah as a path for all future generations.
"And God made man straight" (Koheles 7:29), and the work of creation — He created everything for His honor; and this was the path for the tzaddikim, as it says, "The ways of Hashem are straight; the righteous walk in them" (Hoshea 14:10).
Creation originally laid out a single "straight" road, fit for tzaddikim who never stumble.
But Bnei Yisrael now established a path even for the faltering and those who have become crooked, that they may return to the straight road through teshuvah.
Their repentance carved out a second road — one that even those who have fallen and gone astray can use to come back to the straight path.
And this path the lower ones (Bnei Yisrael) themselves needed to bring from potential into actuality, for "the ways of Hashem are straight."
The road of return could not simply be handed down from above; the people themselves had to actualize it, since Hashem's own ways are straight and do not include crookedness.
[Even though it is brought that teshuvah preceded the world, nevertheless to bring it from potential into actuality was through Bnei Yisrael — for it is likewise brought that Yisrael preceded the world.]
Teshuvah existed in potential before creation, but its realization within the world depended on Bnei Yisrael, who themselves preceded the world in Hashem's thought.
Therefore there was joy before Him as at the work of creation, for this is the perfecting (tikkun) of the world.
Actualizing the path of teshuvah completes and repairs the world, which is why it brought Heavenly joy on a par with creation.
And this is the meaning of "the crown with which his mother crowned him" (Shir HaShirim 3:11): it is called "his mother" because they drew down a new path.
"His mother" alludes to Bnei Yisrael, who, like a mother giving birth to something new, brought a new path of teshuvah into being.
Therefore it is written "on the eighth day," which is above the way of nature, which is the seven days of creation.
The number eight transcends the natural order of the seven days; teshuvah too is a supernatural force, beyond the fixed order of creation.
And how great is teshuvah, as Chazal said: great is the sin — for beforehand the glory of Hashem was revealed, etc.
The Sefas Emes points to the power of sin and its repair: before the Golden Calf, Hashem's glory had been openly revealed.
And after the sin, even of the face of the intermediary (Moshe, the "broker") they were afraid to approach.
The sin so damaged them that they could not even bear to come near Moshe's radiant face — "they were afraid to approach him" (Shemos 34:30).
So too, after they did teshuvah, "the glory of Hashem appeared to all the people" (Vayikra 9:23).
Just as the sin had hidden Hashem's glory, the teshuvah of the eighth day restored it — and now the Divine glory was revealed to the entire nation.
Summary: The inauguration of the Mishkan on the eighth day brought joy in Heaven like the joy of creation, because through their teshuvah after the Golden Calf, Bnei Yisrael carved a new path into the world — a road of return for the faltering and the crooked, alongside the original "straight" road of the tzaddikim. Though teshuvah preceded creation in potential, Yisrael themselves had to actualize it, and doing so was the very tikkun of the world. "Eight" signifies this supernatural power that transcends the seven days of nature: just as the sin had concealed Hashem's glory, the teshuvah of the eighth day restored it, so that His glory was revealed to all the people.
