Two paths to receive Torah

Regarding the days of the milu'im (the inauguration) and "on the eighth day Moshe called..." (Vayikra 9:1).

The Sefas Emes opens on the seven days of inauguration of the Mishkan and the eighth day on which the avodah began.

For it is written: "Seven days shall he inaugurate you" (Vayikra 8:33) — and this is like the "seven complete weeks" (of sefiras ha'omer), which are the refinement of the middos (character traits) to become vessels to receive the Torah on Shavuos.

He draws a parallel: the seven inauguration days correspond to the seven weeks of the omer, both being a period of refining one's middos so as to become a fit vessel for the Torah.

As it is taught: "Prepare yourself to learn Torah" (Avos 2:12).

One cannot simply receive Torah; there must first be a stage of self-preparation.

And when we left Mitzrayim we needed to prepare ourselves for kabbalas haTorah (receiving the Torah).

The exodus did not immediately bring the Torah; the days between were given for preparation.

For the Torah is "longer than the earth in measure" (Iyov 11:9).

The Torah is infinite, beyond any human measure, so one cannot grasp it all at once.

But according to a person's refinement of his middos, he is able to receive through them the illumination of the Torah — "by the measure with which a person measures, so it is measured out to him" (Sotah 1:7).

Although the Torah itself is boundless, each person receives its light in proportion to how much he has refined his own character; his middos are the measuring vessel.

Similar to what is written in the Midrash on Tazria: "and He apportioned the waters by measure" (Iyov 28:25); see there.

The waters of Torah, too, are dispensed "by measure" — each receives according to his capacity.

And in the Mishkan there were seven days of milu'im, for the ba'al teshuvah comes "with great force."

The inauguration was compressed into seven days rather than seven weeks because it follows the path of teshuvah, which surges with intense energy and accomplishes quickly what would otherwise take longer.

And in these seven days they rectified all that is rectified in the seven weeks.

The concentrated power of teshuvah let the seven days of milu'im achieve the full refinement of the seven weeks of the omer.

And these two paths Moshe and Aharon established for the generations.

Two enduring spiritual routes were instituted — one by Moshe, one by Aharon.

Moshe Rabbeinu, alav hashalom, prepared the path of the complete tzaddikim.

Moshe's way is the gradual, steady path of the perfectly righteous, refining the middos over the full seven weeks.

And it is fulfilled every year.

This path is re-enacted annually in the cycle of the festivals.

In Nissan, yetzias Mitzrayim (the exodus).

The tzaddik's path begins with the redemption in Nissan.

And afterward seven weeks until kabbalas haTorah.

It continues through the counting of the omer, culminating in receiving the Torah on Shavuos.

And Aharon established the path of the ba'alei teshuvah, which is fulfilled in Tishrei — the seven days of Sukkos, Shemini Atzeres, and Simchas Torah.

Aharon's way is the teshuvah path, re-enacted each year in the Tishrei festivals, with their concentrated seven days plus the eighth-day climax.

And similar to this is found in the Midrash, that the seven days of Sukkos and Shemini Atzeres are like the seven weeks and Shavuos; see there in Shir HaShirim on the verse "How beautiful are your steps in sandals" (Shir HaShirim 7:2).

The Midrash itself equates the Sukkos cycle with the omer-and-Shavuos cycle, confirming the parallel.

And so too the Gemara derived: regarding the seven days of Sukkos, "you shall dwell" — from "you shall dwell day and night" stated regarding the days of milu'im — to teach that the sukkah applies by day and by night.

Chazal link Sukkos directly to the milu'im through a gezeirah shavah on the word "teishvu" (dwell), tying the two seven-day periods together textually.

For they are an aspect of teshuvah; therefore in seven days one rectifies as much as in seven weeks.

Because the milu'im and Sukkos both embody the surging force of teshuvah, their compressed seven days accomplish the full work of the seven weeks of the omer.

Summary: There are two paths to becoming a vessel for the Torah. Moshe's path of the complete tzaddik is gradual — the seven weeks of sefiras ha'omer from Pesach to Shavuos, refining the middos step by step. Aharon's path of the ba'al teshuvah is intense and concentrated — the seven days of the Mishkan's inauguration, mirrored each Tishrei in Sukkos through Simchas Torah, where the surging "great force" of teshuvah accomplishes in seven days what otherwise takes seven weeks.
