Shabbos as direct sign, tefillin as restored testimony

On the verse: "Akh (however) My Shabbosos (you shall keep)" (Shemos 31:13).

The Sefas Emes begins from the seemingly extra word "akh" that introduces the command to keep Shabbos.

The commentators are precise: what does "akh" come to teach?

The word "akh" ("however," "only") is a limiting term, and its presence demands explanation.

One may say its meaning is "My Shabbosos" — those that are Above, in Heaven.

The phrase "My Shabbosos" hints at a higher, heavenly Shabbos that exists in the upper worlds.

And Bnei Yisrael have a portion in this, as we say: "(He) spreads a sukkah of peace over us."

Bnei Yisrael are granted a share in that supernal Shabbos, as expressed in the blessing that Hashem spreads over us a canopy of peace.

"Pores" (spreads) connotes a portion (peras).

The word "pores" carries the sense of a "portion" — we are given a piece of that heavenly Shabbos.

And as it is written in the Zohar HaKadosh, that on Shabbos there is a sharing in the spirit that descends from Above, and one delights in the delights of Shabbos — see there in Parshas Vayakhel.

The Zohar teaches that on Shabbos a higher spirit descends and a Yid partakes of it, savoring the spiritual pleasures of the day — this is our "portion" in the supernal Shabbos.

And as it is written: "between Me and you" (Shemos 31:13).

Shabbos is described as a sign "between Me and you," underscoring this intimate sharing between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael.

And this is the meaning of "akh" — a portion.

Thus "akh" here denotes that we receive only a portion of the higher Shabbos, our share in it.

It may further be explained that "es" alludes to Tosefes Shabbos (the added time of Shabbos), achieved by yearning on Erev Shabbos for the arrival of Shabbos.

The extra word "es" hints at the practice of adding to Shabbos from the weekday — extending its sanctity through one's longing on Erev Shabbos to receive the holy day.

And it is taught that from midday of the sixth day there is a glimmering of the light of Shabbos.

Already from midday Friday, the radiance of the coming Shabbos begins to shine and can be sensed.

And this too is "akh" as a portion, as Chazal expounded on "akh (but) on the first day you shall remove (chametz)" (Shemos 12:15), etc.

Just as Chazal read "akh" as dividing the day — part for chametz and part for its removal — so "akh" here divides off a portion of Erev Shabbos that already belongs to Shabbos.

And according to the plain meaning: "akh" — that the keeping (of Shabbos) should be solely for the sake of Hashem.

On the simple level, the limiting word "akh" teaches that Shabbos must be observed purely for Hashem's sake.

"My Shabbosos" — specifically.

The emphasis on "My" Shabbosos stresses that the day is to be kept for Hashem alone.

And it is written: "Shabbos Shabbason" (a Shabbos of complete rest) (Shemos 31:15).

The doubled expression "Shabbos Shabbason" invites further explanation.

It may be explained that Shabbos gives blessing and shefa (abundance) to all the weekdays.

Shabbos is the source of bracha that flows into and sustains the six working days.

And so it is taught: one who delights in Shabbos is given an inheritance without boundaries, etc. (Shabbos 118a).

The reward for taking pleasure in Shabbos is a boundless inheritance — the day's blessing knows no limit.

Therefore it is written "Shabbos Shabbason" — that the resting should be for the sake of Shabbos itself.

The doubled phrase teaches that one should rest for the sake of Shabbos itself, not merely as a means to something else.

And not for the sake of Shabbos's blessing upon the weekday matters (the "work of the mundane").

One should not keep Shabbos merely to draw down its blessing for weekday gain; the rest itself must be the goal.

And Rashi, of blessed memory, explained that "akh" comes to exclude Shabbos from the work of the Mishkan.

Rashi reads the limiting "akh" as teaching that even the holy labor of building the Mishkan does not override Shabbos.

And to explain the matter, it seems, based on what was written elsewhere, that all these mitzvos called "eidus" (testimony), and likewise the tefillin called "os" (a sign), are allusions to illuminations from Above that were meant to be actually fulfilled within the very souls of Bnei Yisrael.

Mitzvos termed "testimony" and tefillin called a "sign" are external markers pointing to inner spiritual lights — lights that were originally meant to shine directly within the souls of Bnei Yisrael themselves.

And before the sin (of the Golden Calf), "And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the Name of Hashem is called upon you" (Devarim 28:10) was literally fulfilled, just as it was with the rays of glory on the face of Moshe Rabbeinu, so that they feared to approach him.

Before the chet ha'egel, the divine light shone openly upon every Yid — visibly, as it did from Moshe Rabbeinu's radiant face — so that Hashem's Name was manifest upon them.

Only after the sin, Chazal expounded (that "the Name of Hashem is called upon you" refers to) the tefillin of the head.

After the sin, that open radiance was lost, and Chazal teach that it is now accessed through the tefillin worn on the head.

Meaning that one can attain a measure of the aforementioned illumination through the mitzvah of tefillin.

The tefillin now serve as the vehicle through which a Yid can still grasp a portion of that supernal light.

And on Shabbos Kodesh one does not need tefillin.

On Shabbos there is no obligation of tefillin, and the Sefas Emes will explain why.

As Chazal said, because they (Bnei Yisrael / Shabbos) are themselves a "sign."

Shabbos itself is already a "sign," so the additional sign of tefillin is unnecessary.

For it is written: "between Me and Bnei Yisrael it is a sign" (Shemos 31:17).

The verse declares Shabbos to be a sign between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael, an immediate bond requiring no intermediary.

Meaning, without any intermediary.

On Shabbos the connection to Hashem is direct, unmediated by any external sign such as tefillin.

And as Chazal said: the radiance of a person's face on a weekday is not comparable to that of Shabbos.

On Shabbos a Yid's very face shines with a light far beyond the weekday — the inner illumination becomes visible once more, as it did before the sin.

And it is taught: when Bnei Yisrael are worthy, they themselves bear testimony.

When Bnei Yisrael are deserving, their own beings serve as the "testimony" to Hashem, without need of external signs.

As it is written: "You are witnesses... within yourselves."

The testimony is borne within the Yidden themselves — their souls attest to Hashem.

And so it is written: "You are My witnesses" (Yeshayahu 43:10).

Bnei Yisrael are Hashem's witnesses, their very existence testifying to Him.

And at Kabbalas HaTorah (the giving of the Torah), the form of Bnei Yisrael was transformed.

Receiving the Torah at Sinai elevated and changed the very form and appearance of Bnei Yisrael.

And "all who see them will recognize them" (Yeshayahu 61:9), etc.

The transformation was so manifest that anyone seeing them would recognize the divine light upon them.

But after the sin it is written: "Remove your ornament (edyecha) from yourself" (Shemos 33:5), etc.

After the chet ha'egel, that visible "ornament" — the crowns received at Sinai — was taken from them.

And it became necessary to clarify the testimony through these mitzvos.

With the inner light no longer openly visible, the mitzvos of "testimony" and "sign" — like tefillin — became needed to make that testimony manifest again.

And so Chazal expounded: one who recites Krias Shema without tefillin is as one who bears false testimony against himself.

Since the testimony now depends on the external sign, reciting Shema without tefillin is like testifying falsely — affirming Hashem's unity without the sign that substantiates it.

For it is impossible to clarify (the testimony) without the tefillin.

On a weekday, the inner light cannot be made manifest without the medium of tefillin.

Except on Shabbos Kodesh.

Only on Shabbos is the testimony self-evident, for the day itself is the "sign" and the inner light shines directly — so tefillin are not required.

Summary: The word "akh" in "akh es Shabbososai" carries several layers: our portion in the supernal heavenly Shabbos, the added sanctity of Tosefes Shabbos that already glimmers from Friday midday, and the demand that Shabbos be kept purely for Hashem's sake and for its own sake rather than for weekday gain. Deeper still, mitzvos like tefillin are external "signs" that restore the inner divine light which shone openly upon Bnei Yisrael before the chet ha'egel; on Shabbos, however, that light shines directly and the day itself is the "sign," so no tefillin are needed — the Yid's very being testifies to Hashem without any intermediary.
