Shabbos as foretaste of Olam Haba
On the pasuk: "For it is a sign between Me and you... to know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you."
The Sefas Emes opens with the verse declaring Shabbos a sign between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael, a token of His sanctifying them.
The Gemara expounds: HaKadosh Baruch Hu said to Moshe, "I have a goodly gift in My treasure-house, and Shabbos is its name; I wish to give it to Bnei Yisrael — go and inform them."
He cites the Gemara (Shabbos 10b) in which Hashem describes Shabbos as a precious hidden gift from His own storehouse, entrusted to Moshe Rabbeinu to convey to Bnei Yisrael.
For the ultimate purpose of a person's avodah is, with siyata diShmaya, to merit drawing down kedushah from Heaven.
The goal of all our avodah is to become worthy, with Heaven's help, to draw holiness down into the world.
And the essence of that kedushah is in Olam Haba (the World to Come).
True, complete holiness belongs to the World to Come.
And HaKadosh Baruch Hu did good with us and gave us, even in this world, a foretaste (me'ein) of the kedushah of Olam Haba.
Out of His kindness, Hashem granted us a taste of that future holiness already in olam hazeh.
And this is Shabbos, which is a foretaste of Olam Haba.
That foretaste is Shabbos itself, a taste of the World to Come within our week.
And by means of the kedushah that descends on Shabbos Kodesh, one is able to cling (lehisdabek) to the holiness of Olam Haba.
The holiness that comes down each Shabbos lets a person attach himself, through deveikus, to the kedushah of the future world.
And this is the meaning of "it is holy for you (lachem)."
The Torah stresses that Shabbos is holy "for you" — for your benefit.
That is to say: for your need HaKadosh Baruch Hu arranged that on Shabbos Kodesh there be a finding of holiness in this world.
For our sake Hashem made Shabbos a time when the holiness of the next world can actually be found and accessed here.
"To know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you."
He returns to the closing phrase of the pasuk and now reads it in a future sense.
That is to say: He will sanctify you in the future, in Olam Haba.
"Who sanctifies you" hints that Hashem will fully sanctify Bnei Yisrael in the World to Come — and Shabbos is a present taste of that.
And similarly it is expounded in the Toras Kohanim on the phrase "I am Hashem who sanctifies you" — referring to Olam Haba; see there.
He notes that the Toras Kohanim likewise reads this sanctification as pointing toward the World to Come.
And Olam Haba is hidden, beyond grasping in this world.
The full reality of the next world cannot ordinarily be attained while we are in olam hazeh.
But Shabbos is the pathway by which one can attain a foretaste of Olam Haba.
Shabbos is the channel through which something of that otherwise unreachable holiness becomes attainable.
And this is what they meant by "Shabbos is its name (shma)."
He now explains why the Gemara stressed that the gift's "name" is Shabbos.
For Shabbos is that through which one is able to give a name to the holiness of Olam Haba.
A "name" lets us grasp and refer to something otherwise beyond us; Shabbos is the one handle by which the hidden kedushah of the World to Come can be named and accessed in this world.
Summary: Shabbos is Hashem's precious hidden gift — a foretaste of Olam Haba granted to us within this world. Though the holiness of the future world is otherwise beyond our grasp, the kedushah that descends each Shabbos lets us cling to it now. Shabbos is literally its "name," the one handle by which the hidden holiness of the World to Come can be named and attained here.
