Concerning the Menorah: "three branches of the Menorah from its one side…" (Shemos 25:32).

The Sefas Emes opens his discussion of the Menorah and its branches, seeking the inner symbolism of its structure.

I have already written elsewhere that it hints to the aspect of Shabbos, in which the light of the Torah is revealed — therefore it has the reading of the Torah, and the illumination of the Torah spreads out to all six days of activity.

The Menorah's central shaft with six branches mirrors Shabbos, from which the Torah's light radiates into the six weekdays.

For there are six "orders" in the Torah: "The Torah of Hashem is perfect, the testimony of Hashem…" (Tehillim 19:8).

Just as the verse lists six praises of Torah, there are six paths of Torah corresponding to the six weekdays — alongside the central "Shabbos."

And these are distinct paths according to the Torah.

Each of the six is a particular avenue of divine light, a unique mode of serving Hashem through Torah.

And the body of the Menorah is the essence of the Torah.

The central shaft represents the Torah itself — the unified source from which all six branches/paths extend.

Now there were twenty-two cups: three on each branch and four on the central Menorah shaft.

The Sefas Emes notes the count of twenty-two cups (goblet-shaped ornaments), distributed three per branch and four on the central shaft.

It appears that the hint is that with the twenty-two letters of the Torah HaKadosh Baruch Hu created His world; therefore each day has particular letters upon which that day stands.

The twenty-two cups correspond to the twenty-two letters of the alef-beis, the building blocks of creation, with each day sustained by its own assigned letters.

And three letters are the aspect of the three Avos, by whose power each illuminates a particular letter — therefore there are three tefillos each day.

The three cups per branch correspond to the three Avos (Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov), who established the three daily tefillos, each radiating its own light.

And on Shabbos Kodesh there are four tefillos — the aspect of Mussaf, the joining of Yosef HaTzaddik with the Avos.

The four cups on the central shaft (Shabbos) correspond to Shabbos's four tefillos, the extra Mussaf reflecting Yosef HaTzaddik joining the three Avos.

And it is brought in the holy Zohar:

He now cites a teaching from the Zohar to support the connection of the twenty-two letters to Shabbos.

In the Shabbos hymn "Kel Adon."

The reference is to the Shabbos morning piyut "Kel Adon," an alphabetical hymn.

That it contains twenty-two letters.

"Kel Adon" is structured as an acrostic running through all twenty-two letters of the alef-beis.

And by the "At-Bash" arrangement, the two first and the two last letters are the root of Shabbos.

Using the At-Bash cipher (alef↔tav, beis↔shin), the outermost pairs — which spell the root of "Shabbos" — frame the whole alphabet.

And within them themselves there are twenty-two words.

These framing letters of Shabbos themselves contain a structure of twenty-two units, echoing the full alef-beis.

And consequently the eighteen letters in the middle are three letters for each day of the six days of activity, as mentioned.

Removing the four "Shabbos" letters leaves eighteen, which divide evenly into three letters per weekday — paralleling the three cups on each branch.

And the one who studies wisely in the holy Zohar will understand still more.

The Sefas Emes invites the deeper student to explore the Zohar for further layers of this idea.

Summary: The Menorah's structure — a central shaft with six branches and twenty-two cups — mirrors Shabbos illuminating the six weekdays and the twenty-two letters of Torah by which Hashem created the world. The three cups per branch reflect the three Avos and three daily tefillos, while the four on the shaft reflect Shabbos's four tefillos (Yosef joining the Avos); the eighteen "weekday" letters give three to each day.
