Souls of Yisrael as vessels for Torah's light

On the posuk: "The Torah that Moshe commanded us."

The Sefas Emes begins with the verse "Torah tzivah lanu Moshe," focusing on the bond between the Torah and Bnei Yisrael.

As it is written: "a mitzvah is a lamp and the Torah is light," and it is written: "the lamp of Hashem is the soul of man."

He joins two verses: the Torah is "light," and the soul of a person is a "lamp" — suggesting that the soul is the vessel that holds the Torah's light.

For the neshamos of Bnei Yisrael are the vessels in which the light of the Torah is able to spread.

The souls of Bnei Yisrael are the lamps through which the light of Torah can shine and expand.

Therefore, according to the merit of the generation, so is the light of the Torah explained and revealed to them.

The measure of Torah-light revealed in any generation depends on that generation's worthiness, since the soul-vessels determine how much light can shine.

And likewise, Heaven forbid, when the generation is lowly, the light of the Torah is concealed.

Conversely, when a generation declines, the same light becomes hidden, for the vessels are diminished.

As it is written: "I am with him in distress" — "I" (Anochi) is the Torah, and it depends on the rectification of the souls of Bnei Yisrael.

The Torah (alluded to by "Anochi," the opening word of the Dibros) shares in the state of Bnei Yisrael, dimmed in their distress and dependent on the tikkun of their souls.

And this is the meaning of "commanded us" — that the Torah and Yisrael are bound and joined together.

"Tzivah lanu" expresses that the Torah was given over to Bnei Yisrael as something inseparably bound to them.

Therefore the joy of the Torah is in Yisrael, and Yisrael in the Torah.

Because of this bond, Simchas Torah is a mutual rejoicing — the Torah delights in Yisrael, and Yisrael in the Torah.

And Moshe Rabbeinu is the broker (sarsur) and the one who kindles the light of Torah in the souls of Bnei Yisrael, who are lamps, as above.

Moshe acts as the intermediary who lights the Torah's flame within each Jewish soul, which serves as a lamp ready to be kindled.

And Chazal said: do not read "morashah" (heritage) but "me'orasah" (betrothed), like a bride to a groom — and both are true.

The Torah is both an inheritance and a betrothed bride; both readings capture aspects of its bond with Bnei Yisrael.

For in truth the Torah is a gift implanted in the souls of Bnei Yisrael, but according to a person's rectification, so the light of the Torah is renewed for him.

As an "inheritance," the Torah is already a given within every Jewish soul; as a "betrothed," its light is freshly renewed in measure with one's spiritual work.

And about this we say: "for it is for us strength and light" (oz v'orah).

The two terms "oz" and "orah" correspond to the Torah's two aspects.

"Strength" (oz) — in its essence.

"Oz" refers to the Torah as a fixed inheritance, essentially possessed.

And "light" (orah) — in the spreading of the Torah; according to how much one toils in it, so it is renewed for them at every moment, as it is written: "her breasts will satisfy you at all times."

"Orah" is the Torah's ever-renewing illumination, which expands in proportion to one's exertion — like a nursing source that continually satisfies.

And therefore it is written: "He gives strength (oz) to His people."

Hashem first grants the fixed "oz" — the essential gift of Torah — to His people.

And afterward it is written: "He will bless His people with peace."

After the gift of "oz," there follows the blessing of peace — the added, renewing dimension.

And the blessing is the addition in the continual renewal of the Torah.

This blessing is the ongoing "tosefes" — the fresh chiddush of Torah that comes at every moment through one's labor.

As it is brought: one who sits and toils in the Torah, the Kadosh Baruch Hu sits and learns opposite him.

When a person labors in Torah, Hashem Himself "learns along with him," reflecting how toil draws down ever-renewing Divine illumination.

Summary: The souls of Bnei Yisrael are the lamps in which the light of Torah shines, so the Torah's revelation rises and falls with the merit of each generation, bound inseparably to the tikkun of their souls. Moshe Rabbeinu is the broker who kindles this light; and the Torah is both a fixed "inheritance" (oz, possessed in essence) and a "betrothed bride" (orah, ever-renewed in measure with one's toil) — for one who labors in Torah draws down Hashem's continual blessing, as Hashem Himself learns opposite him.
