Shabbos as gift versus renewal of the Avos

In Rashi: regarding Avraham it says, "[Hashem,] before whom I walked" (Bereishis 24:40) — that he did not need support.

Rashi contrasts Avraham with Noach. Of Avraham it is said that he "walked before" Hashem, meaning he could go on his own strength, without needing to be propped up.

For it is written, "The gate of the inner courtyard... shall be opened on the day of Shabbos and on the day of the new moon (chodesh)" (Yechezkel 46:1).

The Sefas Emes brings the navi's image of an inner gate that opens specifically on Shabbos and on Rosh Chodesh — two distinct kinds of "opening."

Now Shabbos is a gift from Heaven, and so they said, "I have a good gift [in My treasury, and Shabbos is its name]" (Shabbos 10b).

Shabbos is given from Above as a free gift, not something a person generates on his own; Chazal call it the "good gift" in Hashem's treasury.

And Noach was of the aspect of Shabbos, as is stated in the Zohar HaKadosh.

Noach — whose name connotes "rest" (menuchah) — corresponds to Shabbos, a state of rest received from above, as the Zohar teaches.

"With Elokim Noach walked" (Bereishis 6:9) — and this is the "support," for in truth the world was created this way, that its endurance is through Shabbos; therefore it says "with Elokim he walked," as is brought down that the world cannot endure under the attribute of strict judgment (middas hadin) alone, so He joined to it the attribute of mercy (middas harachamim) — meaning, to assist the person.

Noach walked "with" Hashem, leaning on divine support. The world's very survival depends on Shabbos and on Hashem's mercy being partnered with judgment, because creation could not stand on strict din alone; the rachamim is precisely the "support" extended to help a person along.

But the Avos innovated a new path in the world, and that is the path of Torah, the inner dimension (penimiyus) of the world, which is "beyond the letter of the law" (lifnim mishuras hadin); therefore concerning Avraham it says, "Hashem, before whom I walked."

The Avos opened a higher road — the path of Torah, the inner core of creation, operating above the strict measure of the law. Hence Avraham could walk "before" Hashem on his own, drawing from that inner power rather than needing external propping.

And this is the aspect of "and on the day of the new moon it shall be opened" — for this opening comes through the servants of Hashem; and therefore the new moon and the festivals require the sanctification of the court (kiddush beis din).

The Rosh Chodesh "opening" is not a free gift like Shabbos but is brought about by Hashem's servants below. That is why chodesh and the moadim depend on the beis din to sanctify them — they are activated through human avodah.

"Yisrael, who sanctify the times."

As Chazal say, Yisrael are the ones who sanctify the festive times — the kedushah of the moadim flows through the people, unlike Shabbos which Hashem sanctified Himself.

And this is a holiness that the Avos introduced.

This capacity to generate kedushah from below was the new pathway pioneered by the Avos.

Therefore the three festivals correspond to the three Avos, and the twelve months correspond to the [twelve] Shevatim.

The structure of sanctified time mirrors the patriarchs and the tribes: three regalim parallel the three Avos, and twelve months parallel the twelve tribes — all expressions of the holiness drawn into time from below.

And this is the path of the Torah, which is to teach knowledge to a person, to know how to innovate new ways in the world.

The whole point of Torah is to give a person da'as so that he can renew and create new avenues of holiness within the world, just as the Avos did.

And this is the power of the Oral Torah (Torah she'baal peh), which comes forth from the Written Torah.

This creative renewal is precisely Torah she'baal peh — the human-generated unfolding of the Written Torah's hidden potential.

For the work of creation is the deeds of Hashem.

Maaseh bereishis — the fixed natural order — is entirely Hashem's own doing, given from Above.

And the Torah is to teach [a person] to act; therefore they said that the Torah needed to begin from "This month shall be for you" (Shemos 12:2), the first mitzvah.

Rashi's famous question — why does the Torah not begin with the first mitzvah, "hachodesh hazeh lachem"? — is answered here: the Torah's purpose is to teach man to act and create, so it fittingly opens its mitzvos with the sanctification of the new moon, the paradigm of human-driven renewal.

This is the renewal (hischadshus) that comes through the person; and from Avraham began the "two thousand years of Torah."

The whole theme is hischadshus — renewal brought about by human avodah — and it was Avraham who inaugurated it, marking the start of the era Chazal call the "two thousand years of Torah."

Summary: Noach corresponds to Shabbos — a free gift of rest from Above, by which the world endures through Hashem's mercy partnered with judgment; he therefore needed "support." The Avos innovated a higher path: the inner, Torah-dimension of the world, lifnim mishuras hadin, which lets a person walk "before" Hashem under his own power. This is the power of sanctifying time (Rosh Chodesh and the festivals through the beis din), of Torah she'baal peh, and of human-driven renewal (hischadshus) — the very reason the Torah's mitzvos begin with "hachodesh hazeh lachem," an era inaugurated by Avraham.
