Torah as the Third Renewal

Yitro · תרמ"ב (1881) · Essay 1

“In the third month.”

This introduces the Sefat Emet’s teaching that the giving of the Torah corresponds to the third great renewal in the world.

The giving of the Torah is the third renewal in the world.

The Sefat Emet states that creation has three foundational renewals, and the Torah is the third.

The first renewal is creation.

The world’s initial existence is the first divine renewal.

“The world is built upon kindness” — the aspect of Abraham.

Creation corresponds to Abraham, the embodiment of divine kindness.

The second is the exodus from Egypt, the aspect of Isaac, to reveal that there is judgment and a Judge.

The Exodus represents divine justice, aligned with Isaac’s spiritual quality.

And the hint is that the beginning of the Egyptian exile was from the birth of Isaac.

This shows the inner link between Isaac and the process of exile and redemption.

The third is the giving of the Torah, the aspect of Jacob, which is the inner essence of the world.

Jacob represents the inwardness and harmony revealed through Torah.

And these three correspond to nefesh, ruach, neshamah.

The three renewals parallel the three levels of soul.

Just as in an individual there is nefesh, and if he merits they give him ruach, etc.

A person grows spiritually through successive levels of soul, just like creation.

So too in the world: had it been possible to give the commandments immediately, God would not have withheld the good.

The Torah was not given earlier only because the world needed prior spiritual preparation.

But first they needed to receive the level of nefesh, as explained.

Israel had to acquire the lower levels before the Torah could be received.

And these three matters correspond to the three festivals: Sukkot, Passover, Shavuot.

Each festival reflects one of the cosmic renewals.

And Shabbat also testifies to these three renewals.

Shabbat contains within it the full structure of creation, redemption, and Torah.

And this is the hint in the three meals of Shabbat.

The three Shabbat meals parallel the three renewals.

For on it there is rest.

Shabbat embodies the rest associated with creation.

“And you shall remember that you were a slave...”

Shabbat also recalls the Exodus, the second renewal.

And the third is Torah, for the main purpose of the day of rest is to engage in Torah.

Shabbat’s inner essence is Torah-study.

As it is said: “Shabbat shall be entirely Torah.”

Shabbat is designed as a time for expanded Torah consciousness.

And on Shabbat the Torah was given.

The day of Torah’s giving reveals its natural bond with Shabbat.

The reason is that on Shabbat there is greater capacity to attain knowledge.

Shabbat elevates the mind toward divine understanding.

Therefore God established a day of rest for Israel.

Rest enables spiritual ascent.

And just as at the giving of the Torah the world received the level of neshamah.

The Torah elevated the entire world’s spiritual vitality.

So too on Shabbat there is an extra soul.

Shabbat grants an added inner capacity, mirroring the renewal of Sinai.

The Sefat Emet teaches that creation, the Exodus, and the giving of the Torah are three cosmic renewals reflected in the soul-levels nefesh, ruach, neshamah, in the festivals, and within Shabbat itself, which grants an added soul and heightened knowledge.
