On the verse, "Remember the day of Shabbos [to sanctify it]" (Shemos 20:8).

The Sefas Emes begins with the command "Zachor" — to remember and sanctify the Shabbos — and will develop the theme of Shabbos as the unique "vessel" that holds Divine blessing.

Chazal said: Shabbos said before the Holy One, blessed is He, "To everything there is a partner (ben zug)..." [and Hashem replied], "Knesses Yisrael (the assembly of Israel) is your partner."

The midrashic dialogue: Shabbos protested that, while the six weekdays were paired off with one another, it had no "mate." Hashem answered that Knesses Yisrael would be its partner — Bnei Yisrael are uniquely matched to Shabbos.

This is what the verse means: "Remember" — that which I said to the Shabbos, "Knesses Yisrael is your partner."

The Sefas Emes reads "Zachor" as a call to remember this very designation: that Hashem appointed Bnei Yisrael as the partner of Shabbos. Remembering Shabbos means recalling our special bond with it.

The matter is based on what is written in the Zohar HaKadosh: "And He blessed... the seventh day" (Bereishis 2:3) — since no manna was found on it, what blessing was found in it? Rather, all blessings depend on the seventh.

The Zohar raises a question: how can Shabbos be "blessed" with sustenance when no manna fell on it? Its answer is that Shabbos is not a recipient alongside the other days but the source from which all blessing of the whole week flows — "all blessings depend on the seventh."

The explanation of the matter is as Chazal said: "There is no vessel that holds blessing except shalom (peace)."

To understand how Shabbos is the source of all blessing, the Sefas Emes invokes the principle that only "peace" can serve as a vessel to contain blessing. Shabbos, the day of peace, is that vessel.

That is to say: a vessel holds [only] according to its measure; but blessing is more than [any fixed] measure, and no [ordinary] vessel can hold more than its capacity.

The Sefas Emes explains the nature of "blessing": berachah means increase, abundance beyond any set limit. An ordinary vessel, by definition, has a fixed capacity and cannot contain something that overflows all measure. So how can blessing be "held" at all?

And so it was in ma'aseh bereishis (the work of creation): in six days He made the entire structure of nature and creation.

During the six days, Hashem fashioned the finite, measured "vessel" of the natural world — all of creation with its fixed limits and capacities.

But on Shabbos, "He blessed" — [an abundance] greater than the capacity of the vessel of creation.

On the seventh day Hashem added "berachah" — an overflow of blessing exceeding what the finite vessel of creation could naturally hold. Shabbos introduces the infinite into the finite world.

And there was no one fit to receive this blessing — only Bnei Yisrael, through the power of the Torah: "Hashem will bless... His people with peace" (Tehillim 29:11).

This boundless blessing needed a special recipient — a "vessel of peace." Only Bnei Yisrael, through the power of Torah, can be that vessel, as the verse says Hashem blesses His people specifically "with peace," the one container that can hold limitless blessing.

And they have the power to receive the neshamah yeseirah (the additional soul) and the extra blessing.

Through the neshamah yeseirah of Shabbos, Bnei Yisrael gain an expanded capacity, enabling them to receive the "added blessing" that exceeds ordinary, natural limits.

Therefore [Hashem said], "Knesses Yisrael will be your partner" — for they are a vessel that holds blessing.

Now the midrash is resolved: Bnei Yisrael are designated as Shabbos's "partner" precisely because they are the "vessel of peace" capable of holding the supernatural blessing of Shabbos. Shabbos and Knesses Yisrael are matched as blessing and its vessel.

And this addition — the neshamah yeseirah — is greater than the essential [soul], as Chazal said: "the addition of the Holy One, blessed is He, exceeds the essence."

Remarkably, the "extra" soul of Shabbos surpasses even one's essential, everyday soul — for, as Chazal teach, whatever Hashem adds is greater than the original. Shabbos's "tosefes" is no minor supplement but something that outweighs the ordinary.

And this is the blessing of Shabbos; and it is in truth a testimony about the Creator, since the entire world and its fullness are not worthy to receive this blessing.

The blessing of Shabbos testifies to Hashem precisely because it transcends the natural order: the whole created world, by its finite nature, could not contain this blessing. Its very existence points beyond creation to the Creator who is above all measure.

"Vayanach" (and He rested) has the gematria of "ed" (witness).

The Sefas Emes notes a gematria: "vayanach," the resting of the seventh day, equals "ed," a witness — hinting that Shabbos's rest itself bears witness to the Creator.

In six days He created, and the seventh day is a "witness" upon the creation, as it is taught: Shabbos is called "sahaduta" (testimony).

The six days are the act of creation; the seventh day stands as a witness to it. Because Shabbos carries a blessing that the finite world cannot contain on its own, it testifies that there is a Creator above nature. As the Zohar teaches, Shabbos is called "testimony" — the living proof, through its supernatural blessing and the neshamah yeseirah, that the world has a Creator beyond all measure.

Summary: The Sefas Emes explains why Shabbos is paired with Knesses Yisrael. Blessing, by nature, is an overflow beyond any fixed measure, and no ordinary "vessel" can contain it — only "peace" can hold blessing. The six days fashioned the finite vessel of creation, but on Shabbos Hashem added a blessing greater than creation's capacity, and only Bnei Yisrael, through the power of Torah and the neshamah yeseirah, are the "vessel of peace" fit to receive it. This is why they are Shabbos's "partner." Because the whole finite world cannot contain this blessing, Shabbos itself ("vayanach" = "ed") stands as a witness — "sahaduta" — testifying to the Creator who is above all measure.
