Hidden Good Revealed on Shabbos

Yitro · תרל"ו (1875) · Essay 2

“And it is stated in the Zohar: Since no sustenance is found in it, how can blessing be found in it?”

The Sefat Emet quotes the Zohar's question: if Shabbat contains no material activity, how can it be the source of blessing?

“Rather, all blessings—upper and lower—depend on the seventh day.”

Shabbat is the root from which all levels of blessing flow.

Meaning: Shabbat gives blessing to all six days.

The days of the week draw vitality from Shabbat.

It is true that God, in His goodness, continually renews creation at all times.

Creation is constantly sustained by divine renewal.

But this occurs through Shabbat.

Shabbat is the channel by which ongoing renewal enters the world.

And His goodness is Shabbat, as it is said: “It is good to give thanks to the Lord.”

Shabbat itself is an expression of the divine quality of “good.”

And it is written: “How great is Your goodness that You have stored away…”

Shabbat reveals hidden divine goodness.

For God created the world with His supernal goodness.

Creation’s foundation is divine goodness.

And all the lights that the six days were able to receive were given to them.

The six days received only the degree of divine light they could contain.

And the remainder stayed in the upper root.

The surplus divine light remained concealed at its source.

And from that root, renewal comes each day.

Daily renewal derives from the hidden root of divine light.

This is the hidden good, beyond human comprehension.

The concealed divine good transcends ordinary spiritual grasp.

And one cannot reach there.

The hidden good is inaccessible through normal means.

This is the meaning of “stored away for those who fear You.”

Only those with true awe of God can access this hidden light.

For only the reverent, who nullify their will to cling to what is beyond comprehension…

They relinquish ego to connect with the transcendent.

…they merit this light.

The hidden good is revealed to those who surrender their will to God.

Therefore, on Shabbat this hidden good is revealed.

Shabbat uncovers the concealed divine light.

No vessel is found in it.

Shabbat does not involve the material “vessels” of weekday activity.

Which are the forms of influence accessible to human beings.

Weekday vessels allow divine influence to manifest materially.

And Shabbat is a blessing for the days of work.

The weekday world is nourished by the spiritual root of Shabbat.

Meaning: if one is worthy during the weekdays, blessing comes from the root.

Proper weekday conduct opens channels for Shabbat’s blessing.

And this was God’s will: that through work during the six days one merits the blessing of Shabbat.

Work is not a contradiction to holiness but a preparation for it.

And so every Shabbat, blessing flows from the hidden good to the six days.

Each week repeats the cycle of hidden root → Shabbat → weekday blessing.

Until Israel merits, through their deeds, to make all of Shabbat an eternal covenant.

Ultimately, Shabbat’s light will permeate all time.

Meaning: to draw all illumination from the root into all days—then there will be a day that is entirely Shabbat in the future.

The messianic era is envisioned as continuous Shabbat consciousness.

Therefore, all labors are forbidden on Shabbat.

Work would block reception of the higher light.

For it is a day of souls and not of bodies.

Shabbat emphasizes the soul’s life over the body’s.

As stated in the Zohar.

The Zohar provides the spiritual basis for this distinction.

For during the weekdays, a person’s work is to subjugate the body to the soul, to draw close to holiness.

Weekdays are a time for inner refinement and alignment.

But on Shabbat one is only to be ready to receive the influence of holiness that comes to the soul from its root.

Shabbat is not for doing but for receiving.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Shabbat is the channel through which hidden divine good flows into the world. Weekday actions prepare the vessels for this blessing. Ultimately, when all days draw directly from the hidden root, the world will become “a day entirely Shabbat.”
