Shabbos, freedom, and blessing
On the verse, "Cursed is Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be [to his brothers]" (Bereishis 9:25).
The Sefas Emes examines Noach's curse upon Canaan, focusing on what makes servitude itself a curse.
The essence of the curse is servitude and subjugation, and the blessing is only for one who is a free person (ben chorin).
To be enslaved and subjugated is the core of the curse; conversely, true blessing can rest only upon a free person, one not bound under another's domination.
And so too the blessing of the day of Shabbos.
The blessing inherent in Shabbos likewise depends on this quality of freedom.
For the weekdays (yemei hama'aseh) are the rule of one level over another, for creation was made this way — "higher than high watches over them" (Koheles 5:7), this one ruling over that one.
During the six workdays the world operates as a hierarchy of domination, each rung governing the one below it, "level over level," exactly as the natural order was structured.
As they said, "Every blade of grass has a mazal [a heavenly force] that strikes it and says to it, 'Grow!'" And the weekdays are called "yemei hama'aseh" from the expression of coercion (kefiyah), for no one wishes to be subjugated.
Chazal teach that even grass grows only because a celestial force "strikes" it and commands it to grow. The "days of doing" carry a sense of force and compulsion — nothing in nature submits willingly to being bent under another's rule.
And the works of creation are all opposite one to another, and under compulsion each one acts contrary to its own nature — and all of this is a testimony to the Creator, may He be blessed.
The created forces are mutually opposed, and each is forced to act against its own essence to maintain the order of the world. This very coercion bears witness that there is a Borei who imposes harmony upon clashing forces.
But Shabbos is peace (shalom) — a higher conduct is revealed: "the King to whom peace/wholeness (shalom) belongs," meaning that all complete themselves and rejoice in His kingship, for He is the King of truth.
On Shabbos a loftier mode of divine governance shines forth — not coercion but shalom. Now all creation finds its completion and rejoices willingly under the reign of the true King, rather than being forced into submission.
Therefore Shabbos is a remembrance of yetzias Mitzrayim, which is the time of freedom (cheirus); and therefore it contains blessing; and therefore Shabbos was given to Bnei Yisrael, who are free people and able to receive the blessing of Shabbos.
Because Shabbos is rooted in freedom, it recalls the Exodus, the moment of liberation. Since blessing rests only on the free, Shabbos was given specifically to Bnei Yisrael — the bnei chorin who alone can absorb its blessing.
And this is the meaning of, "Those who keep Shabbos shall rejoice in Your kingship."
The "shomrei Shabbos" rejoice in Hashem's malchus precisely because on Shabbos His kingship is one of willing, joyful acceptance — the freedom and peace in which true blessing dwells.
Summary: The essence of a curse is servitude, and blessing rests only on a free person. The weekdays operate as a hierarchy of coercion — each force forced to act against its nature, which itself testifies to the Creator. But Shabbos is shalom: a higher governance is revealed in which all creation completes itself and rejoices willingly in Hashem's kingship. Because Shabbos is bound up with freedom, it recalls yetzias Mitzrayim and carries blessing — and so it was given to Bnei Yisrael, the free people who can receive it, "those who keep Shabbos rejoice in Your kingship."
