Shabbat and Festivals Harmony

Pesach · תר"ס (1899) · Essay 5

Shabbat · Festivals · Divine Light · Joy · Blessing

The matter of Shabbat and Festivals.

The Sefat Emet introduces the distinction between Shabbat and the festivals.

As it is written: “Light is sown for the righteous.”

This verse is the basis for understanding the spiritual light associated with Shabbat.

And this is the aspect of Shabbat, fixed and permanent.

Shabbat’s holiness is inherent and does not depend on human action.

But since Israel, “Your people, all of them righteous,” are vessels to receive this light…

The Jewish people are inherently suited to receive the light of Shabbat.

Therefore Shabbat is for rest, for true rest means returning to one’s place, root, and that which is prepared for him.

Rest on Shabbat reflects returning to the divine source aligned with the soul.

And this is the meaning of “sown for the righteous,” that this light is prepared for them.

The light of Shabbat is stored away for those who are spiritually aligned.

And the festivals are the aspect of “joy for the upright of heart,” which depends on a person’s preparation.

Unlike Shabbat, the festivals require human sanctification and inner readiness.

As it is said: “Israel sanctify the times.”

The holiness of the festivals is activated by Israel’s declaration of the calendar.

And as it is written: “Joy for a man in the answer of his mouth,” for God agrees with their establishment of the month and festivals.

God endorses Israel’s calendrical decisions, making their declarations a source of joy.

Therefore the festivals have a greater joy than the holy Shabbat.

Because they result from human partnership with God, the joy is more revealed.

The Patriarchs are called “upright,” and in their merit the festivals were given to Israel.

The spiritual quality of “uprightness” originates in the ancestors and flows into the festivals.

And behold, through the festivals the entire year is blessed.

The festival seasons channel blessing into all material and spiritual cycles of the year.

As it is said: On Passover the grain in the fields is blessed.

Passover influences agricultural bounty.

On Shavuot, the fruits of the tree.

Shavuot brings blessing to tree produce.

On Sukkot, the rains of the year.

Sukkot determines the year’s rainfall.

And thus we pray: “…Grant us… the blessing of Your festivals.”

The liturgy reflects the festivals as channels of blessing.

Although the primary blessing is on Shabbat, as it is written: “And He blessed the seventh day.”

Shabbat is the root-source of all blessing.

But the blessing of Shabbat is in the root, for as the Zohar states: no vessel is found in it, yet all blessings depend on it.

Shabbat holds transcendent blessing, not yet manifest in physical vessels.

For it is the day of souls.

Shabbat primarily elevates the soul rather than the body.

But on the festivals the blessing is revealed also in the aspect of the body.

Festival blessing becomes tangible and embodied.

Therefore the pilgrimages were performed physically, with the body.

Because the festivals affect the body, one ascended bodily to the Temple.

Therefore it is said that festival garments are more precious than those of Shabbat, for the body is an aspect of garment.

Festival holiness dignifies the body itself.

In truth, the root of the three blessings of the festivals is in the three Shabbat meals.

The festival blessings draw from deeper Shabbat structures.

And in the festivals these blessings are revealed in particular detail, as above.

The festivals manifest what Shabbat contains in hidden form.

Summary: Shabbat contains the root, hidden blessing of the soul, while the festivals draw that blessing into revealed, bodily joy. Israel’s sanctification of time completes the cycle, channeling Shabbat’s inner light into the year’s tangible blessings.
