Voice as Spiritual Power

“In the verse: ‘My dove, in the clefts of the rock… let me hear your voice,’ the sufferings were in order that they would make their voice heard.”
The Sefat Emet explains that the hardships Israel endured were intended to awaken and reveal their inner voice before God.
“The matter is that the entire Exodus and the splitting of the sea were for the completion of the Children of Israel.”
Both redemption events were stages in spiritually perfecting Israel.
“For their essential strength is in their mouths.”
Israel’s unique power lies in speech—prayer, Torah, and vocal expression of faith.
“The Exodus came to rectify speech, and the splitting of the sea to rectify voice.”
These two redemptions correspond to two dimensions of expression: articulated words and the deeper, unformed voice.
“And this is the purpose of the human being, as it is written: ‘All of a person’s toil is for his mouth.’”
The human mission centers on elevating speech and giving holy expression to the inner spirit.
“Their inner essence was hidden, and they could not bring it from potential to actuality.”
Before redemption, Israel’s spiritual capacities were concealed and unrealized.
“Thus it says: ‘In the clefts of the rock’—in the hiddenness of the spiritual level.”
This metaphor reflects Israel’s concealed inner state before the divine revelations.
“And through the splitting of the sea they brought the power of voice into actuality.”
At the sea, their inner cry emerged fully, expressed in song and faith.
“Therefore each day we precede the Exodus and the sea to the voice and speech of Shema and prayer.”
Daily liturgy reenacts this spiritual progression: redemption enables authentic prayer.
“And this is the linking of redemption to prayer, as the Midrash teaches.”
The requirement to connect redemption to prayer reflects this inner process of awakening voice and speech.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Exodus refined Israel’s speech, while the splitting of the sea revealed their inner voice. Redemption enables a person to bring hidden spiritual potential into expression, which is why daily prayer is preceded by recalling these events.
