“And it is written: ‘My strength and the song of God—He was for me salvation.’”
The verse introduces the themes of strength, song, and salvation that the Sefat Emet connects to Torah, prayer, and redemption.
“‘My strength’ refers to the Torah.”
Torah is understood as the sustaining strength of Israel.
“‘Song’ refers to prayer.”
Prayer is the melodic, expressive channel of the heart toward God.
“And the Children of Israel understood that all the salvation granted to them was in order to prepare them for serving God and receiving the Torah.”
Redemption is not an end in itself but a preparation for divine service and Torah acceptance.
“And the hint is that Passover is a preparation for Shavuot and Sukkot.”
Each festival is a step in a spiritual progression beginning with liberation.
“For they are stages, one after the other.”
The festivals form a developmental ladder in Israel’s spiritual growth.
“And therefore we ask: ‘Sanctify us with Your commandments,’ which is the first level—Passover, the first commandment given to Israel.”
Passover represents Israel’s entry into sanctity through mitzvot.
“And exile and redemption are also an aspect of being messengers of a mitzvah.”
Even historical upheaval is framed as part of Israel’s divine mission.
“And afterward: ‘Grant us our portion in Your Torah’—this is Shavuot.”
Shavuot fulfills the progression by giving Israel an active share in Torah.
“‘Satisfy us from Your goodness’—this is Sukkot.”
Sukkot represents divine abundance and shelter.
“‘Gladden us in Your salvation’—this is Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.”
The final festivals celebrate the joy of salvation and the cyclical renewal of Torah.
Summary: The Sefat Emet links the verse ‘My strength and song’ to Torah and prayer, and explains that salvation serves as preparation for divine service. Passover initiates a sequence of spiritual stages culminating in Shavuot, Sukkot, and the joy of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, reflected in the blessings of the festival liturgy.
