Inner Divine Beauty Revealed
Holiness · Inner Light · Spiritual Elevation · Pilgrimage · Purification
In this verse “This is my God and I will beautify Him” — I will adorn myself before Him with the commandments.
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that “I will beautify Him” means serving God with beautified mitzvot.
It is taught that a maidservant saw at the sea what prophets themselves never saw.
This highlights the unprecedented revelation at the Red Sea.
For within every Jew there is a portion of Divinity, as it is written: “The soul You placed in me is pure.”
The root of the heightened vision is the inner divine spark.
Only the garment of the body covers and conceals it.
Physical existence hides the soul’s clarity.
As it is written: “I am black yet beautiful” — this refers to the inner dimension.
The outer darkness contrasts with inner beauty.
And at the splitting of the sea they recognized the Divine power that gives life to all creation.
The concealment lifted long enough for them to perceive the sustaining force of God.
“I will beautify Him” means preparing a dwelling-place in one’s 248 limbs through the 248 commandments.
The mitzvot align the body with divine presence.
And this is the meaning of “I will adorn myself before Him.”
Beautification equals sanctifying one’s embodied life.
And it is also related to the term “dwelling,” as noted above.
Beautifying mitzvot creates a home for the Divine.
And this is what we request: “Return Israel to their beauty.”
We ask for the restoration of revealed inner holiness.
For in the appearance before God in the Temple courtyard, the inner essence of Israel was revealed.
The pilgrimage lifted the veil over the soul.
As it is written: “All your males shall appear,” meaning the inner essence revealed once the covering was removed.
“Appearance” implies exposure of the true inner self.
And certainly those who ascended on the festivals were purified from physicality.
The encounter elevated them above bodily heaviness.
For an eye that sees the vanities of the world cannot see the Presence of the Shekhinah.
Spiritual vision requires detachment from worldly illusions.
As it is written: “How beautiful are your steps in shoes.”
Referring to Israel’s pilgrimage ascent.
This is interpreted as: “Do not look at me for I am dark... They made me guard the vineyards; my own vineyard I did not guard.”
The people were drawn into external tasks at the expense of inward cultivation.
The simple meaning is that the inner essence of Israel is holy to God.
Despite external distractions, the core remains sacred.
But God clothed a person in physical garments in order to elevate action itself into holiness.
The body is a tool for sanctifying worldly activity.
Therefore Israel descended from their exalted level to rectify the nations as well.
The descent is purposeful: to uplift all creation.
Therefore a human being is called a “small world,” for God formed within him elements of all creation so that he might elevate them all.
Humanity carries within itself the full spectrum of creation.
But a person must know what is essential and not cling to what is secondary.
The outer layers must not eclipse the inner purpose.
And in exile the essential was forgotten — thus “They made me guard only the vineyards.”
The exile intensifies misalignment toward externals.
But when the Temple stood, God gave Israel this commandment, that three times a year they merited to remove this garment and ascend to their root.
Pilgrimage restored clarity of soul.
As it is written: “Go out and behold, daughters of Zion, the King Solomon.”
Going out precedes inward vision.
“Go out” means going out from physicality, and then “behold.”
The departure from materiality enables spiritual sight.
Therefore they are called “shoes,” for through these ascents the inner essence was secured so that a person could not forget the essential.
The pilgrimage “locks in” the soul’s clarity.
And this is the hint of “No man shall covet your land when you ascend to appear…”
The ascent shields against worldly craving.
Meaning that the desires of this world will not cling to one’s inner will through the thrice-yearly ascent.
The pilgrimage purifies desire itself.
For at the time of the appearance in the courtyard Israel felt a new vitality.
The encounter renewed the heart.
As it is written: “His appearance is like Lebanon.”
A sign of freshness and renewal.
Rashi explains that one who studies Torah finds new meanings.
Spiritual experience generates new insight.
How much more so the actual appearance before God.
Direct encounter renews even more deeply.
As it is written: “He shall be seen.”
This vision transforms the person.
Certainly all hearts were renewed like a budding forest, as Rashi notes.
The people left spiritually rejuvenated.
Another explanation of “like Lebanon” is that through the vision of the Divine Presence in the courtyard all sins were atoned and Israel’s transgressions became whitened.
The encounter brought purification as well as renewal.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s inner divinity is concealed by the body but revealed in moments of ascent, especially the Temple pilgrimages. These experiences restore clarity, purify desire, renew vitality, and uncover the essential holiness within every Jew.
