עוד יתבאר ההפרש בין שבת למועדות דשבת הוא מתנה כדאיתא מתנה טובה יש לי כו' לך והודיעם.
Further it will be clarified the difference between Shabbat and the festivals, for Shabbat is a gift, as it is stated: “I have a precious gift… go and inform them.”
The Sefat Emet explains that the holiness of Shabbat is not generated by Israel but given to them directly from above as a divine gift.
אבל המועדות זוכין בנ"י בעצמותם כמ"ש מקדש ישראל והזמנים.
But the festivals Israel merit through their own essence, as it is written: “Who sanctifies Israel and the seasons.”
The sanctity of the festivals emerges from Israel themselves, for God sanctifies Israel, and Israel in turn sanctify the appointed times.
וכדכ' מקראי קודש תקראו ולכן השמחה ברגלים.
As it is written: “You shall proclaim holy convocations,” and therefore there is joy on the pilgrimage festivals.
Because Israel actively declare the holiness of the festivals, joy becomes an essential component of those days.
דמאן דאכיל דלאו דילי' בהית לאסתכולי.
For one who eats what is not inherently his is ashamed to gaze upon the giver.
This phrase teaches that receiving a gift evokes humility and restraint, which characterizes Shabbat’s experience.
לכן שבת הוא בשת.
Therefore Shabbat is associated with modest reserve.
The tone of Shabbat is inwardness, awe, and quiet, fitting its nature as a divine gift.
אבל במועדות כתיב יראה כל זכורך שהיו באין להיראות פני ה' בשמחה.
But regarding the festivals it is written: “All your males shall appear,” for they would come to be seen before God with joy.
The festivals invite a joyful encounter with the Divine, since Israel participate in establishing their holiness.
ואיתא לעתיד יהי' מצות ראי' גם בשבתות כדכ' מדי שבת בשבתו כו'.
And it is taught that in the future there will be a mitzvah of appearance even on Shabbat, as it is written: “From one Shabbat to the next…”
In the future revelation, Shabbat too will attain the quality of joyful appearance before God.
שיהי' יום שכולו שבת.
For it will be a day that is entirely Shabbat.
The ultimate era will unify the qualities of Shabbat and the festivals into a single eternal sanctity.
אבל עתה מקבלים בנ"י השבת בבחי' מתנה בלבד.
But now Israel receive Shabbat only in the aspect of a gift.
In the present world, Shabbat remains primarily a divine bestowal rather than something Israel generate.
Summary: Shabbat is a divine gift received with humility, while the festivals derive their sanctity from Israel’s active role, creating joy. In the future, these aspects will unite, and even Shabbat will include the joyful “appearance before God.”
