Sanctifying the First Portion
Bikurim · Omer · Purity · Judgment · Simcha
“Regarding the Omer, the first of your harvest.”
The Sefat Emet begins by focusing on the Omer as the very beginning of the harvest, emphasizing its spiritual role as a first offering.
As it is stated in the Zohar: “The first of the first fruits of your land you shall bring… you shall not cook a kid.”
The Zohar links the mitzvah of offering the first produce with the prohibition of mixing milk and meat, teaching that giving the “first” to God prevents mixture and corruption.
For according to how one gives the first portion to the Creator, blessed be He, no impurity later becomes mixed in.
When the beginning is sanctified properly, the rest of the process remains pure and untainted.
Therefore, the Zohar in Tetzaveh teaches that if Israel guards the Omer and the Two Loaves properly, they need not be judged on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, for all judgment concerns the mixture of impurity.
If the beginning of the agricultural cycle is perfected through these offerings, there is no need for later judgment, which exists only to correct corruption.
And through the Omer and the Two Loaves the produce of the land and the trees is blessed, and no impurity is in them.
These offerings elevate and purify all agricultural bounty for the entire year.
Therefore it is said: “Eat your bread with joy,” referring to the fruit of the earth.
Once the produce is sanctified, one may partake of it with genuine joy.
“And drink your wine with a good heart,” referring to the fruit of the trees.
Purified wine becomes a source of inner gladness because its spiritual root has been elevated.
For He has already accepted it through the giving of the first portion.
God’s favor rests on the entire yield once the first part is devoted to Him.
And the hint is that He already accepted it before the judgment of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
The sanctification of the “first” preempts the later period of divine judgment.
And this testimony becomes clarified on the festival of Sukkot.
Sukkot reveals and affirms the blessing bestowed earlier through the offerings of the first produce.
This is the distinction between Israel and the nations, and it is “the time of our joy.”
Israel’s unique relationship to sanctifying the first yields a deeper, divinely rooted joy.
As it is written: “Go, eat with joy.”
This verse encapsulates the idea that true joy comes from properly sanctifying the beginning.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that sanctifying the “first” through the Omer and the Two Loaves purifies the entire year’s produce, removes the root of judgment, and leads to the unique joy of Sukkot and of Israel.
