Renewal of Exodus and Torah

Pesach · תר"ס (1899) · Essay 3

Passover · Freedom · Revelation · Shavuot · Daily Renewal

“Even if we are all wise… it is a mitzvah to recount the Exodus from Egypt, and whoever increases in telling it—behold, this is praiseworthy.”

The Sefat Emet begins by emphasizing that recounting the Exodus is an ongoing obligation that applies regardless of one’s level of wisdom, because its purpose is renewed spiritual awakening rather than information alone.

As it is written: “When you bring the people out of Egypt, you shall serve [God].”

This verse links the Exodus directly to the service of God, teaching that freedom is only fulfilled through divine service.

And similarly: “I brought you out of the land of Egypt to be God to you.”

The purpose of the Exodus is defined as forming a living relationship with God, not merely national liberation.

And all this order is renewed each year on Passover, the season of our freedom, which corresponds to the level of “You are My servant, in whom I am glorified.”

Passover annually reawakens the spiritual identity of Israel as God’s servants, a status that grants true inner freedom.

Afterwards comes Shavuot, the season of the giving of our Torah.

The cycle moves from freedom to receiving Torah, showing that revelation depends on the prior liberation experienced at Passover.

And according to the freedom awakened on Passover, so is the Torah renewed on Shavuot.

The degree of revelation on Shavuot is proportional to the personal liberation achieved during Passover.

And in a similar way, each and every day contains a remembrance of the Exodus and of receiving the Torah.

The daily spiritual cycle reflects the yearly one: liberation and revelation continuously recur in miniature.

Therefore, even though we have already received the Torah, nevertheless there is a revelation of Torah in every generation, year, and day, each suited to its time.

Torah is not a static event but a living revelation that unfolds uniquely in every moment of history.

Therefore, we must renew our sense of freedom each year.

Only by re‑experiencing inner liberation can we open ourselves to new Torah.

And through this we merit renewed acceptance of His divinity, may He be blessed.

Freedom leads to a deeper capacity to receive God’s presence anew.

“To be God to you” is an ongoing matter that is constantly renewed.

The relationship with God is dynamic and ever‑renewing, just as the Exodus and revelation recur in spiritual form.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Exodus and the giving of the Torah are not past events but spiritual processes renewed yearly, daily, and in each generation. Liberation enables revelation, and both must be constantly re‑experienced to sustain a living relationship with God.
