Shabbos as the day of remembrance and soul-repair

Shabbos · remembrance · neshamah yeseirah · tefillin · purpose of Creation

And likewise Shabbos contains a foretaste of the first Luchos (Tablets).

Shabbos carries within it something of the pristine, unbroken first Tablets, before the sin of the Eigel caused them to be shattered.

And it is written, "For it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations" (Shemos 31:13).

Shabbos is called an "os" (sign) — an enduring mark of the bond between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael for all generations.

For all the impressions that the souls of Bnei Yisrael receive on Shabbos are "for the generations," for it is the "day of remembrance," as above.

The spiritual imprints absorbed by Jewish souls on Shabbos endure permanently, because Shabbos is the day of zechirah (remembrance) — "Zachor es yom haShabbos."

But on the weekdays forgetfulness holds sway, and therefore one needs tefillin "for a remembrance between your eyes, so that the Torah of Hashem shall be in your mouth" (Shemos 13:9) — so that the Name Havayah be upon them, not to forget the Torah.

During the workweek the power of forgetting dominates, so we need tefillin as an aid to remembrance, drawing the Divine Name upon us so that the Torah we learn is not lost.

And to this Chazal alluded when they said that the whole Torah is compared to tefillin.

The teaching that "all the Torah is likened to tefillin" hints that tefillin are the instrument for retaining and securing one's Torah.

For the mitzvah of tefillin helps the Torah that one learns to be something enduring.

Tefillin give permanence to one's learning, so that the Torah a person studies takes lasting hold within him.

And on Shabbos one does not need tefillin, for Shabbos itself is a sign of remembrance.

Because Shabbos is itself the "os" of remembrance, the additional sign of tefillin is unnecessary on that day.

And it is stated in the Gemara: "And He rested (vayinafash)" — "woe (vai), the soul (nefesh) is lost" — referring to the neshamah yeseirah (extra soul) that comes on Shabbos: once Shabbos has departed, "woe, the soul is lost" (Beitzah 16a).

The Gemara reads vayinafash as vai avdah nefesh — when Shabbos ends, we cry "woe" over the departure of the extra Shabbos soul.

And the matter is as Chazal said: "One who forgets a single thing from his learning, Scripture regards it as if he forfeits his soul," as it is written, "and guard your soul … lest you forget" (Devarim 4:9; Avos 3:8).

Chazal connect forgetting Torah with endangering one's very soul — the verse warns to guard one's nefesh precisely against forgetting, linking memory of Torah to the life of the soul.

For this is the very purpose of Creation — that man was created for His honor, may He be blessed.

The whole reason a person exists is to bring honor to Hashem, and forgetting the Torah severs him from that purpose.

And that he should remember the purpose for which he was created.

A person's task is to keep in mind the ultimate goal of his existence.

And this is the day of Matan Torah, when Bnei Yisrael beheld the aspect of Divinity and grasped the purpose of their creation.

At the giving of the Torah, Bnei Yisrael actually perceived Godliness and understood why they had been created — the clearest moment of remembering their purpose.

And of this it is written, "that which your eyes have seen" (Devarim 4:9).

The verse that warns against forgetting refers to that revelation at Sinai which "your eyes have seen" — the perception a Jew must never let slip away.

Indeed, also on the individual level, in every soul, it is stated that they make the neshamah swear and teach it the entire Torah, and when it comes into the world it is forgotten from him (Niddah 30b).

Chazal teach that before birth the soul is taught the whole Torah, but upon entering this world that knowledge is forgotten — so each person, too, has Torah hidden within waiting to be re-remembered.

Therefore Hashem gave Bnei Yisrael Torah and mitzvos, by means of which they come to remembrance.

The Torah and mitzvos are the instruments by which a Jew reawakens and recovers the Torah and purpose he had forgotten.

Therefore it is written regarding Shabbos "vayinafash," which is the aspect of "Zachor (Remember)."

Shabbos, expressed by vayinafash and commanded with "Zachor," is the day uniquely devoted to remembering.

And therefore Shabbos is called "testimony" (sahaduta), and it is a remembrance of the act of Creation.

Shabbos bears witness to Creation and serves as the standing memorial of how the world was made.

And the meaning is that during the six days of Creation, the creation was attached to its Root.

While the world was being created, it remained directly bound to its Divine Source.

And then the purpose of Creation — for His honor, may He be blessed — was evident.

In that original state it was plainly visible that all of Creation existed to give honor to Hashem.

And from then onward, nature conceals and causes forgetting of the essential purpose.

Once the world settled into its natural course, teva (nature) began to hide and obscure the true goal of existence.

And for this Shabbos was given — to recall the purpose of Creation.

Shabbos counteracts nature's concealment by reminding us each week of why the world was made.

And therefore it is the purpose of heaven and earth.

Shabbos is the very goal toward which heaven and earth were created.

And likewise within man — for every Jew, Shabbos reminds him for what purpose he was created.

On the personal level, Shabbos refreshes each Jew's awareness of the reason for his own existence.

And this is the repair of the soul.

This act of remembering is itself the rectification and healing of the nefesh.

For it follows, since whoever forgets forfeits his soul —

Given that forgetting Torah is described as forfeiting one's soul, the reverse must also hold.

It follows of itself that when he comes to remembrance, he revives his soul.

If forgetting endangers the soul, then remembering restores and brings life to it.

This is "vayinafash" — that through it the soul is repaired.

Vayinafash (rest/soul) signals that on Shabbos, through remembrance, the soul is mended and renewed.

And in truth this is by the power of the neshamah yeseirah that comes from above, where there is no forgetting.

The extra Shabbos soul descends from a higher realm untouched by forgetfulness, and it is this that empowers the remembering and the soul's repair.

And Shabbos is a foretaste of the world-to-come.

Shabbos gives a taste in this world of the future world's reality.

For it is stated that in the future they remind a person of all that he learned and forgot in this world.

In the world-to-come, all the Torah a person studied and lost in this life will be restored to his memory.

So too, something of this occurs on every Shabbos, for each person according to the power of the neshamah yeseirah within him.

Every Shabbos brings a measure of that future restoration of memory, in proportion to the extra soul each individual receives.

Therefore when Shabbos arrives, one sees what had been forgotten from him during the weekdays.

With the onset of Shabbos, the spiritual clarity lost amid the workweek's distractions returns to view.

And to this Chazal alluded: "Once Shabbos has departed, woe, the soul is lost."

The cry at Shabbos's end mourns the loss of that restored remembrance and the extra soul that made it possible, until the next Shabbos renews it.

Summary: Shabbos is the day of remembrance — the "os" and "testimony" that counters the forgetfulness of the workweek, where weekdays need tefillin as an aid to retaining Torah. Since the purpose of Creation, revealed at Matan Torah and known to the soul before birth, is constantly obscured by nature, Shabbos and its neshamah yeseirah revive the soul by restoring what was forgotten — a weekly foretaste of the world-to-come, where all forgotten Torah will be returned. Thus "vayinafash" both repairs the soul and is mourned at Shabbos's departure: "woe, the soul is lost."
