Shabbos above time, revealed for Bnei Yisrael

"And you shall guard the Shabbos, for it is holy unto you" (Shemos 31:14).
The Sefas Emes focuses on the words "holy unto you" (lachem), which he will read as "for your sake" — Shabbos's holiness is revealed in this world specifically for Bnei Yisrael.
That is to say: for your sake the holiness of Shabbos is revealed in this world.
"It is holy unto you" means that the kedushah of Shabbos, which is otherwise far above this world, becomes manifest down here only on account of Bnei Yisrael.
For in truth Shabbos is above time, as it is written, "Six days He made [the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested]" (Shemos 31:17).
Shabbos is not really a unit of time like the six days of creation; it stands above time entirely. The verse implies that the "making" belongs to the six days, while the seventh is of a different, timeless order.
If so, Shabbos is above all of ma'aseh bereishis (the work of creation).
Since Shabbos transcends time, it stands above the entire created order, which was fashioned within time during the six days.
Therefore the essence of Shabbos belongs to the souls in Gan Eden and to the future to come (le'asid lavo).
Because Shabbos is above the physical, time-bound world, its true home is the spiritual realm — the souls in Gan Eden and the World to Come, where existence is beyond time.
Only for the sake of Bnei Yisrael is some of the holiness of Shabbos revealed in this world.
That this timeless, supernal holiness can be experienced at all in our physical, time-bound world is solely thanks to Bnei Yisrael, who serve as the conduit for its revelation here.
And concerning this Chazal wrote: Shabbos said, "I have no partner (ben zug)," and the Holy One, blessed is He, replied, "Knesses Yisrael (the assembly of Israel) shall be your partner."
The midrashic image of Shabbos lacking a "mate" expresses that there was no one in the created world fit to be paired with Shabbos's lofty holiness — until Hashem designated Knesses Yisrael as its partner, the one capable of receiving and being joined to it.
For there is no one in this world who can receive the holiness of Shabbos — only Bnei Yisrael, by virtue of His having taken us out of Egypt.
No earthly being is fit to receive Shabbos's supernal holiness except Bnei Yisrael, and even they only because the Exodus lifted them above the natural order, making them able to contain a holiness that transcends this world.
As it is written, "therefore Hashem commanded you... to keep the day of Shabbos" (Devarim 5:15).
The verse ties Shabbos to the Exodus: "therefore" — because Hashem freed you from Egypt — "He commanded you" to keep Shabbos, since only a people thus liberated can be the partner of Shabbos.
And this is the meaning of "to know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you" (Shemos 31:13); and Chazal said: one who gives a gift must make it known [to the recipient].
The verse states that Shabbos is given so that Bnei Yisrael will "know" that Hashem sanctifies them. Chazal teach that a giver of a gift should inform the recipient — so Shabbos serves as Hashem's announcement of a gift He is bestowing.
Although [the verse] is needed to make known the obligation to guard Shabbos, [its deeper meaning is] that Bnei Yisrael have a connection to the root of Shabbos above, through the neshamah yeseirah (the additional soul).
On the simple level, "to know" informs us of the duty to keep Shabbos. But more deeply, it reveals that through the extra soul of Shabbos, Bnei Yisrael are bound to the supernal root of Shabbos — the gift being "made known" is this very connection to the world above.
"To know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you" — in Gan Eden and in the World to Come; and as Chazal said, Shabbos is a foretaste of the World to Come (me'ein olam haba).
The "knowing" extends beyond this world: through Shabbos, Bnei Yisrael come to know the sanctification Hashem will grant them in Gan Eden and the World to Come. Shabbos is a taste, even now, of that future holiness — which is why it links Bnei Yisrael to its supernal root.
A further explanation of "it is holy unto you": that even your [physical pleasure] on Shabbos is holy, as it is taught in the Zohar HaKadosh (Vayakhel) that the Ruach HaKodesh descends on Shabbos and takes pleasure, as it were, from the meal of Bnei Yisrael.
The Sefas Emes offers a second reading of "holy unto you": even the bodily enjoyment of Shabbos (the food, the rest) is itself holy. The Zohar teaches that a holy spirit descends on Shabbos and "delights" in the Shabbos meals of Bnei Yisrael — so their physical pleasure becomes a vehicle for kedushah.
And this is the aspect of "one who delights in the Shabbos" — that very illumination which descends on Shabbos.
The mitzvah of oneg Shabbos draws upon this descending light: by delighting in Shabbos, a person partakes of the holy illumination that comes down upon the day.
And to this the verse hints, "eat it today" (Shemos 16:25) — meaning, to nourish "the day" through oneg Shabbos.
The verse about the manna, "eat it today," is read as a hint that through the physical eating of oneg Shabbos one "feeds the day" itself — drawing the holy light into the very enjoyment of Shabbos.
And this is an extra affection for Bnei Yisrael, as we say, "He desired us, and the holy Shabbos... He gave us as an inheritance."
That even bodily pleasure can become holy, and that Bnei Yisrael are joined to the supernal root of Shabbos, expresses Hashem's special love for them. The Shabbos liturgy affirms this: out of His desire for us, He bequeathed us Shabbos — a gift, an inheritance, and a sign of His affection.
Summary: The Sefas Emes teaches that Shabbos is essentially above time and above the whole created order, truly belonging to the souls of Gan Eden and the World to Come; its holiness is revealed in this world only "for your sake" — for Bnei Yisrael, who alone, by virtue of the Exodus and the neshamah yeseirah, are fit to be Shabbos's "partner" and receive it. Shabbos is Hashem's gift, "made known" to inform us of our bond to its supernal root and of the future sanctification it foretastes. In a second reading, even the physical delight of Shabbos becomes holy, for a holy light descends and delights in the Shabbos meals — all an expression of Hashem's special love for Bnei Yisrael.
