Bnei Yisrael as the partner of Shabbos

Ki Tisa · תרל"ב (1871) · Essay 3

Shabbos · Knesses Yisrael · concealment · revelation · channel of vitality

In the Midrash: Shabbos said before the Holy One, blessed be He, "Everyone has a partner, but I have no partner," and He answered, "Knesses Yisrael (the Community of Israel) shall be your partner" (Bereishis Rabbah 11:8).

The Sefas Emes opens with the Midrash in which Shabbos complains that, unlike the six weekdays which are paired off, it has no mate — and Hashem responds that Bnei Yisrael will be its partner.

And this is not understood.

The Sefas Emes flags the difficulty: what does it mean that Shabbos "lacks a partner," and how do Bnei Yisrael fill that role?

And one may explain the meaning: that there is a concealment to the six days.

He begins to resolve it: the six weekdays are characterized by hester — the Divine vitality within them is concealed.

For their root is above the seventh day.

Although the weekdays appear lower, their source actually lies higher than the seventh day — they descend from a very lofty place.

As [indicated by] the order of counting — the seventh comes after the six.

The very sequence hints at this: the seventh day follows the six, suggesting that in terms of root the six precede and stand above it.

Only that because they are so lofty, they have concealments.

Precisely because their source is so exalted, the weekdays cannot reveal their light openly in this world; their very loftiness forces concealment.

And their essence is not [revealed] in this world.

The true essence of the weekdays does not manifest in olam hazeh (this world); only an outer, veiled aspect of them appears here.

Only by way of concealment.

They are present in this world solely through hester — clothed and hidden rather than openly revealed.

And as Chazal said, that on weekdays the conduct [of the world] is through an angel.

Chazal teach that during the week the world is governed through an intermediary — a malach (angel) — rather than through open Divine revelation.

And he is an agent.

The angel functions as a shliach (agent), a messenger conveying the Divine influence at one remove.

Even though a person's agent is like himself (Kiddushin 41b).

True, the halachic principle is that an agent is "like the one who sends him," so the angel faithfully represents Hashem's will.

For surely it is written, "And You give life to them all" (Nechemiah 9:6).

There is no doubt that Hashem alone is the source of all life — He "gives life to them all" — even when that life flows through an intermediary.

And nevertheless it is by way of concealment.

Still, during the week this life-giving comes wrapped in hester — Hashem's presence, though real, is hidden behind the agent.

But on Shabbos His glory, blessed be He, is revealed within the worlds.

On Shabbos the concealment lifts and Hashem's kavod (glory) shines openly throughout all the worlds.

And through Shabbos the weekdays become bound to their root.

Shabbos reconnects the six concealed weekdays back to their exalted source, gathering up their scattered light.

For Shabbos cleaves this world to the root of vitality in the upper world.

Shabbos acts as the link that joins olam hazeh to the source of all chiyus (life-force) in the higher world, drawing the lower into dveykus with its origin.

And this is the meaning of "it has no partner" — that it has no distinct vessel of reception as the weekdays do.

Now the Midrash becomes clear: Shabbos "lacks a partner" because, unlike each weekday, it has no separate receiving aspect of its own through which it draws and channels life.

For each [week]day has an aspect that receives life from the supernal day, as above, in order to give life to the world.

Every weekday possesses a "receiving" dimension — a partner-vessel — through which it takes in Divine life from above and transmits it to sustain the world.

And He answered, "Knesses Yisrael shall be your partner."

Hashem's response supplies what Shabbos lacks: Bnei Yisrael themselves serve as the receiving partner of Shabbos.

For regarding Shabbos too it is written, "between Me and Bnei Yisrael" (Shemos 31:17).

The pasuk establishes Shabbos as a covenant specifically "between Me and Bnei Yisrael" — Bnei Yisrael are the ones bound to it as its partner.

And it is only to Bnei Yisrael that His glory, blessed be He, is revealed on Shabbos.

The open revelation of Hashem's glory on Shabbos is granted specifically to Bnei Yisrael — they are the vessel that receives this disclosed light.

And through them vitality is drawn to all the worlds.

Bnei Yisrael, receiving the revealed Shabbos light, become the channel through which Divine vitality then flows out to sustain all of creation.

And by this it is understood that for the nations, even on Shabbos the abundance comes through an intermediary — namely, His people Bnei Yisrael.

It follows that while Bnei Yisrael receive Shabbos's light directly, the nations of the world receive their shefa (abundance) even on Shabbos only by way of an intermediary — and that intermediary is Bnei Yisrael, through whom the flow reaches all the worlds.

Summary: The weekdays each have a "partner" — a receiving aspect that draws concealed Divine life from a lofty root and sustains the world through an angelic intermediary. Shabbos, when Hashem's glory is openly revealed, has no such separate vessel; instead Bnei Yisrael are its partner. To them alone the Shabbos light is disclosed, and through them vitality flows to all the worlds — so that even the nations receive their portion on Shabbos only by the intermediation of Bnei Yisrael.
